Speaking at the reception, Director of the Department of State Protocol and Foreign Interpretation Pham Binh Dam congratulated Ms. Gillian Bird on her appointment as Australian Ambassador to Vietnam.

Director Pham Binh Dam said that with many years of experience working in diplomacy, the Ambassador will continue to promote and deepen the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two countries.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs , the Department of State Protocol and Foreign Interpretation, and relevant units are always ready to cooperate, coordinate and create all conditions for the Ambassador to successfully complete his term of office.
Thanking the Director of the Department of State Protocol and Foreign Interpretation for taking the time to meet her, Ambassador Gillian Bird affirmed that she will actively contribute to the continuous consolidation and development of the Vietnam-Australia relationship in all fields.
* Ambassador Gillian Bird is an experienced career diplomat. She served as Australia’s Ambassador to France from 2020 to 2024. She was Australia’s Ambassador and Resident Representative to the United Nations from 2015 to 2019.
From 2004 to 2014, Ms Gillian Bird served as Australia's Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade. From 2008 to 2013, she also served as Australia's first Ambassador to the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN).
Prior to her appointment as Deputy Minister, Ms Gillian Bird served as Director General, International Department, Department of the Prime Minister and Cabinet (2002-2004). Prior to her appointment as Director General, she was Head of the Foreign Affairs and Trade (Advancing the National Interest) White Paper Task Force at the Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade.
Previously, she also held the positions of: Director of the South and Southeast Asia Department (1999-2002); Director of the International Organization and Legal Affairs Department (1997-1999); Deputy Director of the Peace, Arms Control and Disarmament Department (1994-1997) and Deputy Director, Operations Department (1993-1994).
She also served in the Office of the Secretary of State for Trade Negotiations. Ms Bird’s overseas postings included UN New York (1990-1993), Harare (1986-1987) and Paris OECD (1980-1983).
She was awarded the Civil Service Medal in 2012 for outstanding public service in the field of International Relations. She was awarded an Honorary Doctorate by James Cook University in 2020 for distinguished service to international relations. Ms Gillian Bird graduated with a Bachelor of Arts with Distinction from the University of Sydney and is a graduate of the École Nationale d'Administration in France.
