Concert Film: A New Piece for the Performance Ecosystem

In recent years, concert films (films recording musical performances, combining stage and backstage scenes) have become increasingly popular in Vietnam. With strong development, this genre is not only a recording but also brings a real experience like attending live, attracting a large audience. This trend marks a new step forward in the country's performance and film industry, contributing to the expansion of the entertainment ecosystem.

Concert Movie Boom

The clearest evidence of the explosion of concert films in Vietnam is “Anh trai say hi: The villain creates the hero”. Released in theaters at the end of February, the film immediately set a record with more than 45,000 pre-ordered tickets, becoming the concert film with the highest revenue in the history of Vietnamese theaters. The first screenings were all “sold out”, clearly demonstrating the attraction of this genre.

In mid-March, Hoang Thuy Linh’s “Vietnamese concert film: We are Vietnamese” was released with a vibrant atmosphere, attracting a large number of fans. The premiere witnessed the appearance of many famous artists and a long line of audiences eager to experience the film, creating an emotional event. Next, an unannounced concert film project from the producer of the program “Anh trai vu ngan cong gai” is also being awaited. These works promise to strengthen the position of concert films in Vietnam.

Worldwide, concert films have become an important trend in the entertainment industry. International artists such as Taylor Swift, BTS, and Blackpink have taken advantage of this format to promote their brands and expand their audience. Taylor Swift's "The Eras Tour Movie" caused a stir when it earned more than 260 million USD, becoming the highest-grossing concert film in history. In Vietnam, Son Tung M-TP's "Sky Tour: The Movie" earned more than 10 billion VND after just a few days of release, while My Tam's "Tri Am The Movie: Nguoi Chu Thoi Gian" reached 12.3 billion VND after 9 days and was then released by Netflix on this platform in 190 countries and territories. Both films not only brought in impressive revenue but also continued to be released on television and digital platforms, expanding the artists' influence. These figures show the strong commercial potential of concert films, and confirm the great demand from Vietnamese audiences for this type of entertainment.

Development potential

Not only does it expand the audience, concert films also help artists connect more deeply with their fans. The films not only recreate the concert but also depict behind-the-scenes moments and the artists' feelings, helping viewers better understand life behind the spotlight. It is this emotional connection that makes concert films a product with great potential.

However, Vietnamese concert films still face a big challenge: Keeping emotions intact and conveying messages clearly. Many works still focus on filming instead of building in-depth content, making it difficult for audiences to fully perceive the artistic message. If producers focus more on storytelling, professional editing and investing in the cinematic experience, this film genre will not only be a "copycat" product but can reach further in the market. Only when this limitation is overcome, concert films will become a sustainable commercial film genre, instead of a temporary trend.

The great potential of concert films shows that this is not only a trend but also an important step forward for the Vietnamese entertainment industry. Audience member Tran Thanh Van, who attended My Tam's "Tri am" concert in person, shared that the experience of watching a concert film gave her a completely different perspective. "I was there at the concert, but when I watched it again on the big screen, I felt more emotions, saw details that I had not noticed before. The film not only recreated the event but also helped the audience immerse themselves in every moment." Such feelings show that concert films are not only a means of recording a concert but also enhancing the emotional experience of the audience.

According to Mr. Tran Tuan Anh, senior consultant of Megatix Global, the development of the concert market in Vietnam reflects the maturity of the entertainment industry, especially after the pandemic when "live" music and concerts became inevitable trends. In addition, according to the assessment of Advertising Vietnam Co., Ltd. - a media and advertising unit for art and entertainment products, artists are now taking advantage of concert films as a means to get closer to global audiences, expanding their reach to millions of people through the big screen.

These comments show that concert films are not only an entertainment product but also a strategic tool, helping artists and the music industry expand their influence, strengthen connections with audiences, and create attractive business opportunities for the film industry and theater systems. If properly invested in with more engaging storytelling, concert films will not only stop at being products exclusively for fans but can also attract mass audiences, creating a sustainable market. Artists, producers, theaters and audiences all benefit from this development, affirming that concert films are an important part of the future entertainment industry.
