'I don't have a role of a lifetime'

I respect the creative team's way of building the story.

- The movie "My family is suddenly happy" has come to an end, how does Lan Phuong feel now?

We have been on quite a journey together. The project lasted for 8 months and everyone together created the story, the finished product. I think the film brings a message that makes many people think.

My most special impression of the audience's reaction is the love and hate for the character Ha. People's emotions change constantly. At first, there were many opinions about Ha. There were times when the audience really liked this character, but when a certain situation happened, they turned their backs. It kept changing like that. Luckily, near the end of the film, the character Ha became more loved.

For me, when playing the role of Ha, every scene has a lot of psychology. Even the happy scenes, but to make it humorous and charming, it requires concentration, calculation and creating emotions from within. However, the audience can pay more attention to the sad scenes because it affects psychology and emotions more clearly.

- Some people think Ha is too childish and selfish?

In fact, each woman will have a different personality. Some are calm and mature, some are childish and innocent. Depending on the conditions and living environment, women will change or keep their instincts.

Ha is sometimes very childish and adorable and sometimes has to be disciplined. Ha is lucky to have a husband and his family who love and pamper her. However, Ha gradually changes and matures every day.

At first, I didn't like Ha. If you just skim through the script, you'll only see things like the audience feels about Ha: selfish, noisy, spoiled... Slowing down a bit, I think I can build the character of Ha to be more lovable and her bad traits like a child who needs to be disciplined to become better.

This is an opportunity for the audience to see a different side of me, instead of screaming and going crazy like Dieu in A Lifetime of Enmity or being tragic like Khanh in Love on a Sunny Day . With the role of Ha, everyone will see my more youthful and humorous energy.

- According to Lan Phuong, she was once invited to play the role of Phuong. In the end, the audience saw Phuong in the role of Ha, why was that?

That was the director and producer's decision. Maybe later people felt that Ha had more emotional states, was more difficult to express and was more multi-dimensional. Therefore, this character helped me show more of my abilities. That was the answer I received.

- A part of the audience was disappointed when "Our Family Is Suddenly Happy" fell into tragedy, especially in the last episodes. What do you think about these reviews?

A movie when released always receives many reviews from the audience. Each person has their own point of view. In the crew of My Family Suddenly Happy , the work of the producer and director is more difficult, they have to synthesize the elements and decide which direction to create the story to bring the best effect from their perspective.

We respect the creative team's way of building the story. As a professional actor, I try to understand the character, understand my story and express the best of what the script brings.

"Doan Quoc Dam is a good actor, with many variations"

- Not only “My family is suddenly happy” but many Vietnamese films today are being made in a “rolling” method at an extremely fast and urgent pace. In your opinion, what difficulties do actors encounter in this way of making films?

In my opinion, the method of making a rolling film is not new, many film industries in the world have applied this method. Accordingly, the film crew will rely on the audience's emotions to bring the story in the most appropriate direction.

For me, the difficulty in filming a rolling story is at the beginning of the story. I don’t know where my character will go, what the ending will be, and how their personality will develop. However, I see it as an interesting challenge. My approach is to learn about the character very carefully in the beginning, understand the character, like the character himself. Once I understand the character, no matter what happens, they will still keep the character’s original point of view, thoughts, and perspective to solve situations and events later.

- Adjusting the script according to the audience's reaction can also create the opposite effect. Even some popular dramas that have extended the number of episodes are considered to be long?

I don’t judge much about the way my colleagues or people around me work. I always try to do my best at my job. Besides, if there is any request on set, the director will handle it.

With the crew of My Family Suddenly Happy , I think I am lucky to work with good actors. They are all emotional and energetic people. During the filming, I felt like we were a real family. Therefore, the family scenes became easier.

In addition, the team of writers, cameramen, and directors are all young people. They have open and civilized thinking. We are quite comfortable sharing, exchanging, and respecting each other's opinions during the filmmaking process to bring about the best results.

- What about your co-star Doan Quoc Dam?

Without my assessment, the audience can see that Doan Quoc Dam is a good actor with many variations. I usually don't comment too deeply on my co-stars. To be more objective, I think the audience is the most impartial person.

- There are so many movies being aired that it can get boring when an actor acts in many movies at the same time. Do you worry about this every time you receive an invitation?

When I was working in the arts in Ho Chi Minh City, this situation happened frequently. It was not uncommon for an actor here to run shows or act in 2-3 films at the same time. Of course, there will be people who find it difficult to make the roles have different colors. But for me and I believe many other professional actors can do it. They will know how to make each character different according to the requirements of the script.

During the filming of My Family Suddenly Happy, I filmed another Tet TV project in Hell and Cinema - Soul Eater. Taking on two roles at the same time, I had a way to have two different sources of energy and feelings about the characters. I think I did well.

- How did you get your first role?

Like many other actors, I started out as an extra. I'm glad it was an opportunity for me to apply what I learned to real life on set.

Besides acting in TV series, I am also a stage actor. I am quite lucky that I always play the main role, so I have deep and multi-dimensional psychological experiences of the character. Those experiences follow me into films as well as other plays. Every day I tell myself to do better.

With theater, I was lucky to always play the main role. I was approached and started to step into the theater and cinema school. With that experience, I followed it into the movies. Every day I have to do better.

- Can the role of Dieu in "A Lifetime of Enmity" become a milestone marking the explosion and turning point in Lan Phuong's career?

I usually leave the evaluation to the audience. When I have a role, I will try to do the best I can. I do not have the concept of a lifetime or explosive role. Each character has its time and moment. I believe that when I have completed a role, it means I have done it and it becomes the past. Now, my challenge is to make the present better than yesterday.

- After time on set, how do you spend time with your family?

When I’m not filming, all my time is spent with my family and my child. My daughter is only 5 years old and she really needs the attention of her parents. So no matter how tired I am from filming, I still try my best to spend quality time with her. In addition, I take the time to run my business.

Lina rarely watches the movies I act in because she usually goes to bed around 9pm. Sometimes she watches clips on TikTok and starts to get a sense of what her mother’s acting job is. That is, her mother is doing something unrealistic like pretending to cry, laugh… However, she doesn’t care too much.

Now is the time when my husband and I are observing our child to see what she is capable of. I think at this age she is discovering herself. Lina has a very good memory, logic and creativity. In addition, she likes physical activities such as swimming and reading.

- How does your foreign husband support your artistic activities?

My husband clearly separates work and personal life. He always supports me and wants me to have more opportunities in my career.

Actually, I don't have any principles when it comes to acting. However, as a professional actor, I will work professionally. After filming, I usually go home immediately to my children. When I'm single, I spend time for myself. I rarely go out with friends, so it's hard for sensitive situations to happen. I don't intentionally limit that, but it's simply my personality.

- Currently, the issue of cyber violence is receiving attention. As a famous person, do you feel pressured by negative messages or comments on social networks?

I have been through the time of being affected by the negativity from social networks. I myself am a person who rarely has scandals or problems to be criticized much.

Of course, there were 4-5 times when I felt pressured by negative comments about me. I spent a whole week in a state of madness and depression. But then I got stronger and realized that the best way to deal with it was to stop reading comments. It was that simple.

Whenever there are negative comments, I just skim through them to know that there are such opinions. The important thing is that I know who I am, what I am doing and how I need to improve. Therefore, I am not affected or influenced by the opinions around me.

That is one of the things I want to give to my children. When you have good inner strength, you will always be strong enough to do everything you want and not be affected by the negative things around you.

As we all know, sometimes online stories are just someone typing a few words without thinking or a place for people to express their opinions. When I understand the nature of the problem, I am not affected. In the end, it is just words on the internet, you just need to turn off the internet and it will be gone.
