National electricity consumption exceeds 1 billion kWh/day for the first time

According to Vietnam Electricity (EVN), in the last days of May 2024, the intense hot and humid weather that recurred in many areas of all three regions caused the national electricity consumption to increase to a record high.

According to data from the National Power System Dispatch Center, although the peak capacity of the entire system as of May 28 has not surpassed the peak of the end of April (47,670 MW, which is also the historical peak to date), the national electricity consumption on May 28, 2024 reached a new record peak of 1.0019 billion kWh. This is the first time in history that the national electricity consumption in a day has exceeded 1 billion kWh.

Particularly for the Northern region, although the weather has been quite hot and humid in recent days, it has not yet reached its peak. Electricity consumption in the North has also increased in both capacity and output in recent days, but has not yet surpassed the old peak. Therefore, electricity consumption in the North continues to increase, increasing the pressure on electricity supply during the peak heat waves that may occur in the coming time.

For the first time in history, national electricity consumption per day exceeded 1 billion kWh.

To join hands to contribute to ensuring electricity supply during the hot summer of 2024, which has been facing unfavorable weather conditions, EVN hopes to continue to receive the sharing and active cooperation of people and electricity customers through thoroughly using electricity economically, especially during peak hours at noon (from 11:00 to 15:00) and in the evening (from 19:00 to 23:00).

In particular, pay special attention to the reasonable use of air conditioning, only turn on the air conditioner when really necessary, set the temperature at 26-27 degrees or higher. At the same time, pay attention not to use many high-capacity electrical devices at the same time during peak hours. Thoroughly using electricity economically also minimizes the risk of electrical incidents and limits the situation of high electricity bills.

According to EVN, to ensure electricity supply in 2024 and the following years as directed by the Prime Minister, EVN and its units have been synchronously implementing solutions to optimally operate the power system and electricity market, increase electricity imports, accelerate investment and construction progress, and encourage customers to use electricity economically and efficiently.

EVN said it has directed the National Power System Control Center to establish methods and operate the power system and the electricity market in an optimal manner. Develop power supply scenarios, update weekly factors on power production, load demand, and hydrological developments to proactively establish and adjust power system operation plans.

In addition, Power Corporations/Companies closely coordinate with People's Committees of provinces/cities to strictly and effectively implement electricity saving programs and solutions.

EVN has also been resolutely implementing tasks and solutions to invest in and build projects in accordance with the Prime Minister's direction to ensure the progress of key power source and grid projects. Especially in the current period, EVN and its units are focusing their highest efforts with all solutions to strive to complete the construction of the 500 kV line 3, Quang Trach - Pho Noi, according to the schedule required by the Prime Minister.
