Drinks play an important role in controlling gout, helping to reduce the painful symptoms caused by the disease.
MSc. Dr. Tran Thi Trinh, Department of Musculoskeletal, Tam Anh General Hospital, Hanoi, said that when implementing a daily nutritional regimen to reduce the pain symptoms caused by gout, patients often only pay attention to what to eat and what to avoid, forgetting to control the types of drinks put into the body. Drinks are also an important part of the nutritional regimen, having a significant effect in reducing pain caused by gout. Below are the recommended drinks for gout patients:
Water
2/3 of uric acid in the body is excreted through the kidneys. Therefore, drinking plenty of water helps uric acid to be easily excreted from the patient's body as well as reduces the formation of uric acid crystals. In addition, drinking plenty of filtered water also helps reduce swelling, lubricate joints and prevent other symptoms of gout. Patients need to drink at least 8 glasses of water a day. When drinking water, do not drink a lot at once but divide it into many times a day, each time in small sips. Patients should drink water as soon as they wake up, do not drink a lot of water before and between meals.

Soda
Pure soda contains high levels of bicarbonate alkali. This alkali has the effect of metabolizing blood and effectively neutralizing uric acid. To improve gout with soda water, patients should drink pure soda, without adding lemon or sugar; before drinking, let the soda evaporate all CO2; drink every day, after meals.
Cafe
The enzyme xanthine oxidase is a catalyst for the conversion of purines into uric acid. Caffeine in coffee acts as a xanthine oxidase inhibitor. Therefore, when patients drink coffee, caffeine can slow down the conversion of substances into uric acid, reduce gout symptoms and shorten the treatment process.
People with gout should drink coffee with low-fat or skim milk, no sugar.
Lemonade
The abundant vitamin C content in lemon juice helps to strengthen the immune system and neutralize uric acid in the patient's body. Therefore, lemon juice not only helps control gout but can also help healthy people prevent this disease.
Green tea
Green tea has long been known as one of the drinks with high antioxidant properties, helping to effectively fight inflammation. Not only that, although not much, green tea also has the ability to reduce uric acid. Drinking green tea every day combined with treatment as prescribed by your doctor, as well as following a suitable diet will help speed up the healing process of inflammation caused by gout.
Low fat or skim milk
This is a recommended drink for people with bone and joint diseases in general and gout in particular because it is rich in calcium, has a high content of vitamin D and protein. In particular, vitamin D is a substance that supports calcium synthesis, contributes to strengthening bones, improving and maintaining bone function. Calcium helps the process of bone density formation to take place better, eliminating excess uric acid. Another benefit that skim milk and low-fat milk bring to people with gout is to help reduce uric acid levels in the blood thanks to protein.

Harmful drinks that patients should avoid include:
Alcohol : High purine content, alcohol and yeast are the causes of gout attacks, making the condition worse, increasing the intensity and frequency of joint pain attacks.
Soft drinks, carbonated drinks, and energy drinks contain a lot of fructose. This is a factor that increases blood acid levels, causing excess uric acid and leading to gout.
To control gout symptoms well, in addition to daily food and drink consumption, Dr. Trinh recommends that patients also pay attention to regular exercise, adequate rest and regular health check-ups.
