Mr. Le Quang Tri in Thuong Hai village, Binh Lang commune collects abandoned fields to grow rice and flowers.

Making fallow fields "yield gold"

10 hectares of abandoned fields in Thuong Hai village are now covered with a lush green color of rice and flowers. In early September, many workers are harvesting white lilies in the fields of Mr. Le Quang Tri's family (46 years old).

In 2019, Mr. Tri went to each household in the village to collect and rent abandoned fields for cultivation. Mr. Tri recalled: "The day I received the fields, looking at the whole field covered with only reeds and sedges, many people advised me to stop. But I was still determined to do it. I rented plows and excavators to re-dig the land, rebuild the canals... After 3 months, the abandoned land had become square plots."

Mr. Tri boldly borrowed 300 million VND from the bank to improve the land, buy more sprayers, sowing machines, harvesters... to develop production. He persistently stuck to the fields, stuck to the fields, with the support of machines in hand, so the land did not fail the people. The large concentrated rice fields were favorable for the specialized cultivation of "same rice, same variety".

In the first crop, Mr. Tri focused on growing Q5 rice variety with a yield of 1.9-2 quintals/sao. He also proactively sought outlets, linking with local traders to sell. He also renovated 1 hectare of land to grow lilies and single flowers for harvest in the 8th lunar month, during Tet. Thanks to that, each year Mr. Tri earns an average profit of 120-150 million VND from farming.

Having worked hard in the fields for nearly half his life, Nguyen Tat Cong in Thuong Hai village once thought of abandoning his fields. However, when he saw the fertile fields abandoned and overgrown with weeds, Cong could not bear it. Originally, his family had only a few acres of contracted fields, but now they have renovated and covered 15 hectares of fields in all the fields in the commune.

Recalling the early days, Mr. Cong's family encountered many difficulties. The low-lying area in the village had been abandoned for many years, so the renovation was not easy. Starting to rebuild 15 hectares from scratch, Mr. Cong had to calculate meticulously and choose a suitable production model or he would be left empty-handed. Cultivating two crops a year, thanks to knowing how to apply science and technology and choosing quality varieties, his family's rice often has a yield that is superior to that of small-scale intensive farming families. After deducting expenses, each year, his family earns hundreds of millions of dong from rice.

Economic development

The formerly abandoned fields of Shanghai village are now covered in lush green.

From a locality with many abandoned fields, Binh Lang commune has now become the "capital" of large-scale fields. The whole commune has more than 20 households participating in the land accumulation model with a scale of more than 90 hectares. All of this area was previously abandoned or in low-lying areas that were difficult to cultivate. Along with rice cultivation, many households have also converted to grow vegetables, cassava, sugarcane, combined with rice cultivation and fish farming... bringing a stable source of income for people, from 80-200 million VND/household/year.

According to Mr. Nguyen Khac Vien, Chairman of the Farmers' Association of Binh Lang Commune, with the spirit of daring to think and dare to do, many households have boldly invested in machinery and technology, gathering fallow fields into large-scale fields, getting rich right on their homeland. Some households have also invested in straw rolling machines and spraying pesticides with drones, which both reduce labor and bring high efficiency in production. Also because people stick to the land, there are no more abandoned fields in the area. The agricultural production value of Binh Lang Commune in 2023 reached 34.8 billion VND, an increase of 11.53% compared to 2022.

According to the People's Committee of Binh Lang Commune, to achieve the above results, the commune is very interested in supporting and encouraging local people to participate in the land accumulation model. Every year, the People's Committee and the Commune Agricultural Service Cooperative provide financial support to households to dredge canals, build irrigation systems within the fields, provide guidance on farming techniques, and apply science and technology to production. The locality also organizes meetings to honor households that accumulate land of 2 hectares or more, listens to their thoughts and aspirations, thereby helping households find solutions. The commune also creates all conditions within its authority to help households that wish to borrow or lease land for production.

Mr. Dao Van Soai, Vice Chairman of the District People's Committee, assessed that farming on large-scale fields helps people enjoy their fields, changing the habit of fragmented and ineffective farming. For many years, Binh Lang commune has always been a pioneer in the district's land accumulation movement. This bright spot needs to be replicated, contributing to the implementation of the project "Developing concentrated, effective and sustainable agricultural production for the period 2021-2025" of the Tu Ky District People's Committee.
