Ho Chi Minh City – A 21-year-old girl, experiencing back and lumbar pain, was diagnosed by doctors with a herniated disc due to incorrect gym training techniques.
On May 19th, Dr. Calvin Q. Trinh, Head of the Musculoskeletal Adjustment Unit at Hospital 1A, stated that the patient presented with severe lower back pain radiating to the buttocks and legs, numbness in both legs, increased pain when bending or straightening, and inability to sit for long periods or participate in sports activities.
The patient stated that they had been going to the gym for over a year and recently experienced back pain after weightlifting exercises. They were diagnosed with a herniated disc at a hospital but received no treatment.
At Hospital 1A, doctors concluded that the patient's pelvis was anteriorly rotated, hip misaligned, and the physiological curvature of the cervical and lumbar spine was altered. After three sessions of musculoskeletal adjustment treatment, the patient's condition improved; they could sit with less pain and fatigue, and their daily activities were easier and they felt more energetic.
According to Doctor Trinh, statistics show that herniated discs commonly occur in middle-aged individuals due to the aging process, degeneration after prolonged work, overexertion, and heavy lifting, leading to damage to the discs and spine.
Nowadays, patients with herniated discs are much younger due to changing work and lifestyle trends such as office work, computer and phone use, prolonged sitting or standing, long-term poor posture habits, and lack of exercise.
According to Dr. Trinh, moderate and proper exercise, along with a balanced training regimen, is important. Excessive, continuous, and incorrect exercise can lead to herniated discs.
