The Nusret-2023 Invitation exercise took place from November 28 in Canakkale province and in the Saros Gulf with the participation of 15 countries and 20 observer units from other countries.
The exercise aims to train command, planning and mine warfare, as well as improve interoperability between mine warfare units from various countries. The exercise is scheduled to last until December 6.
Speaking at a press conference, the commander of the Turkish Navy's mine fleet, Mustafa Kaya, stressed the danger of mines at sea.
He said more than 200 mines left over from World War I had been discovered in the country's waters and that Türkiye had taken necessary measures to reduce the risk from these explosives.
The exercise involved Italy, Greece, Spain, Croatia, the United States, Romania, Saudi Arabia and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Mine Action Group 2.
