What do candidates need to do to adapt?

Nguyen Bao Chau, a 9th grade student at Dinh Cong Secondary School (Hanoi), said: "After Hanoi announced that the third subject for the 10th grade entrance exam for the 2025-2026 school year would be Foreign Language, I and my classmates breathed a sigh of relief because our review plan from the beginning of the year was not disrupted because for many years, Hanoi has always maintained these 3 subjects in the 10th grade entrance exam."

However, Chau also shared that what makes her feel worried is that from the 2025-2026 school year, the admission score for grade 10 public high schools will not double the coefficient of 2 subjects Math and Literature as before, but will be calculated based on the total score of all 3 subjects. This requires students to study all 3 subjects equally, not to be biased towards any subject, otherwise it is very easy to fall into the risk of failing grade 10 public high schools.

Trinh Hoang Bach, a student at Giang Vo Secondary School (Hanoi) also shared: “Of the 3 subjects for the 10th grade entrance exam, I do best in Math. Previously, Math was multiplied by a factor of 2, so I would have more advantages in the admission process, but with this new regulation, that advantage will no longer exist. To cope with the new regulation, instead of focusing too much on my strong subjects, I now have to divide my time appropriately for all 3 subjects because if I score low in just 1 of the 3 subjects, my chances of being admitted will decrease.”

Many teachers also believe that the adjustment of the method of calculating admission scores for grade 10 public high schools from the 2025-2026 school year aims to no longer distinguish between major and minor subjects, encouraging students to study all subjects with scores to ensure comprehensive knowledge at secondary school level. However, in the context of the current disparity in English proficiency of students in the city between schools, especially between inner-city and suburban areas, this will be a significant pressure for students with limited foreign language proficiency.

Sharing more with CAND Newspaper reporter, Mr. Nguyen Cao Cuong, Principal of Thai Thinh Secondary School (Hanoi) said: Not doubling the coefficient of 2 subjects Literature and Math in the entrance exam to grade 10 from the 2025-2026 school year is completely consistent with the goals of the new general education program issued in 2018. The reason is that in the new general education program, all subjects are equally important, equal and there are no main subjects, secondary subjects according to the previous traditional view, aiming at developing comprehensive capacity for students at secondary level.

“Previously, the coefficient multiplication of the two subjects Literature and Mathematics in the admission process was applied according to the 2006 general education program. However, the 2025-2026 school year is the first year of the 10th grade entrance exam according to the new general education program, so adjusting and applying the new method of calculating admission scores is reasonable, closely following the program, and suitable for reality,” Mr. Cuong emphasized.

Mr. Nguyen Cao Cuong also said that the review plan for grade 9 students to take the 10th grade entrance exam has been built by secondary schools since the beginning of the school year. Up to this point, after Hanoi announced the third exam subject for grade 10, students are more confident and "speed up" their review.

“This year, students with an advantage in English will have an advantage and more opportunities than those with Math and Literature because both of these subjects are difficult to achieve a perfect score. To increase their chances of admission, students need to take advantage of all 3 admission wishes divided by admission area. At the same time, all 3 admission wishes are divided into 3 groups with different admission scores from high to low, in which the gap between admission wishes must be within 3 points to ensure safety and minimize risks,” said Mr. Cuong.

Mr. Luu Van Thong, Principal of Dich Vong Secondary School (Hanoi) also advised candidates to base on the benchmark scores of previous years to calculate the average score of each subject in the entrance exam to the school they want to register for. From there, review the review process, tests, and mock exams of the students to see how much they have achieved. For example, if the average score in the tests and mock exams is only 6-7, then they should register for a group of schools with similar benchmark scores; they should not register for a group of schools with benchmark scores of 8-9 points.

Mr. Nguyen Van Binh, Deputy Head of the Examination Management and Education Quality Assessment Department, Hanoi Department of Education and Training, said that like previous years, Hanoi's 9th graders this year have 3 wishes to enter public 10th grade. Of which, wishes 1 and 2 must be in the prescribed enrollment area. For wish 3, candidates can register in any enrollment area among the 12 enrollment areas in Hanoi.

According to Mr. Binh, with the formula for calculating admission scores for grade 10 from the 2025-2026 school year, which is not to multiply the coefficient by the two subjects of Math and Literature, the benchmark score may be lower than in previous years, but it does not mean that the exam is more difficult or the exam results will decrease, but only because of the change in the way of calculating the score. Therefore, when registering for wishes, candidates need to carefully consider the order of their wishes, especially not to register for wishes 1 and 2 at schools with similar appeal as shown in the number of registrations and benchmark scores in recent years to avoid risks.
