12 Vietnamese schools in the world top
The US News & World Report (abbreviated as US News) organization in the US announced the ranking of the best universities in the world for the 2024-2025 school year at the end of June, after a year of stopping publication for unknown reasons. Among the 2,250 universities from 104 countries and territories ranked, Vietnam has 9 representatives, with 4 new names being universities including Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Can Tho University, Nguyen Tat Thanh University and Hue University.
According to the US News rankings, leading Vietnam and being in the world's top 300 are Ton Duc Thang University in Ho Chi Minh City (ranked 253, down 30 places compared to the 2022-2023 rankings) and Duy Tan University in Da Nang (ranked 296, up 21 places). These are also 2 units from Vietnam in the top 100 best universities in Asia of this ranking, ranked 52nd and 65th respectively.
Following that, Nguyen Tat Thanh University, in its first appearance, ranked 3rd in Vietnam, at 730th in the world. Meanwhile, the two universities, Hanoi National University and Ho Chi Minh City National University, both made breakthrough gains, to 844th (up 126 places) and 865th (up 251 places). On the opposite side, Hanoi University of Science and Technology dropped 140 places, to 1,710th. Meanwhile, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology, Hue University and Can Tho University debuted at 1,590th, 2,010th and 2,043rd in the world, respectively.

In addition to the 9 representatives mentioned above, 3 other universities in Vietnam were named but did not meet the overall ranking criteria: Hanoi Medical University, Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology and Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics. However, in the university ranking by subject group, Ho Chi Minh City University of Economics ranked 77th in the world in economics and business, while Ho Chi Minh City University of Technology ranked 413th in engineering.
Hanoi Medical University alone has two fields ranked, in which the group of public health, environmental health and occupational health is ranked 68th in the world, and the group of clinical medicine is ranked 433rd.
Thus, Ho Chi Minh City is the locality with the most universities in the world top with 6 units, followed by Hanoi with 3 units. Meanwhile, Da Nang, Hue and Can Tho each have 1 university in the world top ranked by US News.
What are the ranking criteria?
According to US News, to be ranked, universities must have at least 1,250 articles published in scientific journals from 2018 to 2022. Then, the schools will be evaluated based on Web of Science data analysis and InCites data provided by Clarivate (UK) based on 13 criteria, divided into 3 groups: academic reputation (reputation), bibliometrics (bibliometrics), and scientific excellence.
Some criteria that can be mentioned are global research reputation, regional research reputation, number of publications in the top 10% most cited group (together accounting for 12.5%) of scientific publications, percentage of publications in the top 10% most cited group, standardized citation impact (together accounting for 10%)...

This year, in the top 20 best universities in the world, there are 14 representatives from the US, 4 from the UK, 1 from China, 1 from Canada. In the top 5, Harvard University (US) is in the lead, followed by Massachusetts Institute of Technology (US, 2nd), Stanford University (US, 3rd), Oxford University (UK, 4th) and University of California at Berkeley (US, 5th). Although dominating the top positions, in terms of the total number of ranked schools, China has surpassed the US and is leading with 422 units.
In an official statement, Dr. LaMont Jones, US News’ education editor, said the Best Global Universities rankings provide a starting point for students to compare schools around the world, regionally and by specific subject groups. One highlight is the addition of four new subject groups this year: ecology; green science, technology and sustainability; environmental engineering; and marine and freshwater biology.
US News is one of the prestigious and experienced university ranking organizations, along with the rankings of QS, THE (UK) and Shanghai Ranking Consultancy (China). This organization began ranking universities and high schools in the US since 1983. In 2014, US News first published the ranking of the best universities in the world with 500 schools from 49 countries and territories.
More and more Vietnamese schools are entering the world's top
Previously, the 2024 World University Rankings announced by THE in mid-June recorded 13 representatives from Vietnam, 4 more than last year. Of which, 4 new schools were ranked for the first time: Nguyen Tat Thanh, Van Lang, Lac Hong and Viet Duc Universities. In the 2024 World University Rankings released by QS in early June, Vietnam had 6 representatives, including 1 new school, Hue University.
