Vietnamese sports are focusing all resources to try to win 12 to 15 places at the 2024 Paris Olympics, while there are less than six months left until the Games open.

Up to this point, we only have four official spots; the remaining spots are waiting for the efforts of athletes in the following sports: Badminton, rowing, taekwondo, judo, boxing, athletics, weightlifting, gymnastics. Vietnam has officially won four spots to the 2024 Paris Olympics, including one spot for cycling (Nguyen Thi That), one spot for swimming (Nguyen Huy Hoang), two spots for shooting (Trinh Thu Vinh and Le Thi Mong Tuyen). Currently, according to the Director of the Department of Physical Training and Sports Dang Ha Viet: "Badminton athlete Nguyen Thuy Linh (ranked 23rd in the world) has secured a spot to participate and is only waiting for an announcement from the World Badminton Federation, Thuy Linh is even likely to be selected as a seed and have a chance to go deep". Vietnamese badminton also has athlete Le Duc Phat (ranked 83rd in the world) who will be supported to participate in many tournaments in early 2024 to find a chance to go to France. In 2018, Vietnam won the Gold Medal in rowing at the ASIAD hosted by Indonesia. At that time, four athletes: Pham Thi Thao, Ta Thanh Huyen, Luong Thi Thao and Ho Thi Ly won the Gold Medal in the women's lightweight quad boat, with a time of 7 minutes 01 seconds 11. Unfortunately, at the 19th ASIAD, the host country China did not organize the lightweight rowing events, making it impossible for Vietnam to defend its top position and also not be able to win a ticket to the Olympics in this event. After the Lunar New Year of Giap Thin 2024, rowing athletes will have to participate in a number of international tournaments and are likely to win two spots in both rowing and canoeing. Martial arts are also one of Vietnam's strengths, especially in the lightweight categories. Taekwondo athlete Truong Thi Kim Tuyen (Asian champion in 2021) is quite energetic. Last year, at the 2023 World Taekwondo Championships, competing in the women's 49 kg category, Kim Tuyen (then ranked 23rd in the world) defeated the third-ranked athlete in the world, Daniela Paola Souza (Mexico) in the round of 16. With the experience of winning a ticket to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Kim Tuyen continues to be the leading candidate for Vietnamese taekwondo to participate in the upcoming Olympics. In fact, Kim Tuyen is still only ranked second in Asia and has certain limitations when facing opponents with better height in international tournaments. To be able to compete with Tran Hieu Ngan (who won the first Olympic silver medal of Vietnamese sports in Sydney in 2000), Kim Tuyen will have to make a lot of effort. In 2023, at the World Boxing Championships in India, Vietnamese boxer Nguyen Thi Tam made great efforts to reach the finals and won a silver medal in the 50 kg category. Unfortunately, the tournament organized by the International Boxing Association (IBA) was not recognized despite being supervised by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). Therefore, Nguyen Thi Tam still has to wait for another opportunity. Boxer Nguyen Van Duong, who won a ticket to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, also does not have a ticket to Paris and is working hard to prepare for tournaments in the qualifying round. The Vietnamese judo team is one of the earliest teams to compete in 2024. On January 26, three boxers Hoang Thi Tinh, Nguyen Ngoc Diem Phuong, and Chu Duc Dat participated in the 2024 Grand Prix in Portugal, but were not successful and will have to find opportunities in tournaments in the upcoming 2024 Grand Prix system. In addition, there are many Vietnamese athletes who are approaching the achievement of participating in the Olympics such as the women's 4x400m running team, gymnast Tuan Phong in the rings event, weightlifter Trinh Van Vinh in the men's 61kg category... All of the athletes named above will not have a normal Tet, they all have to actively practice to achieve the best results to find a place to attend the Olympics this year. The fact that they are struggling to find tickets to the Olympics has been acknowledged by the Department of Physical Education and Sports as being due to the spread out investment and the lack of a mechanism for top athletes to receive better investment to aim for the continental and Olympic arenas. The Department of Physical Education and Sports is making efforts to build specific regulations for top athletes to ask the Government for investment approval. In the near future, each National Sports Training Center will focus on training top athletes in three to four key sports to avoid the current situation of inadequate investment. Hopefully these mechanisms will soon be issued to suit the conditions so that Vietnamese sports can move towards larger arenas and achieve high results, instead of focusing all their efforts on regional sports events.
