U.17 Vietnam has a 'strange' player
The flow of overseas Vietnamese players has shifted to Vietnam over the past decade, and in the last 2 years, when the Vietnam Football Federation (VFF) and Vietnam Professional Football Joint Stock Company (VPF) "gave the green light" for V-League teams to use overseas Vietnamese players, that flow has become even stronger. In the past 2 seasons, V-League always had 6-8 overseas Vietnamese players, including names that have been and are affirming their value such as Nguyen Filip , Patrik Le Giang, Adou Minh or Jason Quang Vinh...
The national youth teams are also actively looking for overseas Vietnamese players. Having played for the Dutch youth teams, Thomas Mai Veeren (Vietnamese name Mai Cong Thanh) is not the first mixed-race player to wear the Vietnamese youth team jersey, and certainly not the last. In the upcoming training session of the U.22 Vietnam, maybe Viktor Le (Ha Tinh Club), Zan Nguyen (HCMC Club) or Andrej Nguyen An Khanh will catch the eye of coach Kim Sang-sik.
Coach Cristiano Roland said: “I have learned information about player Thomas through the videos I received. In the coming time, I will directly verify his ability through training, from which we can compare, evaluate and make decisions. We will continue to observe and support him to integrate into the team. Whether he can help the team or not will take more time. Hopefully he will bring good things to the team.”

Overseas Vietnamese players, especially young talents, help Vietnamese national teams at all levels have more options. They possess ideal physiques with good height, modern football thinking, and professional and standard lifestyles. In the era of football globalization, when opponents from Southeast Asia to Asia level all open their doors to talents outside their country's borders (then naturalized), U.17 Vietnam in particular and Vietnamese football in general cannot be out of the trend.
Recruiting overseas Vietnamese players or naturalized foreign players is fine, as long as there is a clear direction and reasonable use to improve the quality of the team. This does not take away the position of domestic players, but on the contrary, increases competition, forcing players to try their best. Open-mindedness towards players with foreign blood will help Vietnamese football find a new path.
