Antimicrobial resistance is becoming a serious challenge to global health and a major risk to socio-economic development.

Recently, Deputy Minister of Health, Prof. Dr. Tran Van Thuan signed and issued Decision 3465/QD-BYT 2024, approving the "Action Plan for Antimicrobial Resistance Prevention in Healthcare" for the period 2024-2025.

The Ministry of Health approved the "Action Plan for Antimicrobial Resistance Prevention and Control in Healthcare" for the period 2024-2025.

This plan is expected to help prevent and control drug resistance, contribute to protecting public health and promoting sustainable development.

According to the Ministry of Health, drug resistance is becoming a serious challenge to global health and a major risk to socio-economic development.

The World Health Organization (WHO) has emphasized the importance of this issue since World Health Day 2011 with the theme: "No action today, no cure tomorrow". This reflects the urgency of preventing antibiotic resistance worldwide, including Vietnam.

In Vietnam, antibiotic resistance is on the rise. The irrational and uncontrolled use of antibiotics in both medicine and agriculture has caused many types of bacteria to become resistant, reducing the effectiveness of treating infectious diseases and threatening the achievements of modern medicine.

The national strategy sets out four main objectives: raising awareness and knowledge about antibiotic resistance, strengthening communication and education to raise awareness among the community, health workers, veterinarians and people about the rational use of antibiotics.

Strengthening the drug resistance surveillance system: Establishing surveillance facilities in hospitals and providing specialized training to health workers in culture, identification and antibiogram techniques.

Reduce the spread of microorganisms and infectious diseases: Implement infection control measures in healthcare facilities to minimize the risk of spreading resistant bacteria.

Use antibiotics appropriately and responsibly: Ensure the correct antibiotic, dose and duration of treatment are used to prevent the development of antibiotic resistance.

Based on the national strategy, the Ministry of Health has developed an "Action Plan for Antimicrobial Resistance Prevention in Healthcare for the period 2024-2025".

The goal of the plan is to slow the progression of resistance, control the spread of resistant bacteria, and ensure the appropriate supply and use of antibiotics.

The plan also sets out specific targets: 100% of provinces and cities have approved plans to prevent drug resistance and are funded for implementation; the rate of correct understanding of drug resistance prevention among adults is at least 50% and among health workers is 60%.

In particular, the monitoring system will be expanded, with the participation of 50% of hospitals under the Ministry of Health and each province and city will have at least one participating hospital.

Vietnam is one of the pioneering countries in the Asia-Pacific region in developing and implementing an action plan to prevent drug resistance.

These efforts have been highly appreciated by the international community, demonstrating the strong commitment of the Government and partners in protecting public health and preventing the rise of drug resistance.

The implementation of the 2024-2025 action plan will be an important step forward, contributing to the common goal of controlling and preventing antimicrobial resistance, protecting public health, and moving towards a sustainable development future for Vietnam.

The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that by 2050, every 3 seconds, one person will die from drug-resistant superbugs, equivalent to about 10 million people per year.

At that time, common illnesses such as coughs or even a cut could be fatal. The WHO even called antibiotic resistance a global health crisis.
