Is it safe to remove makeup with fresh milk?

VnExpressVnExpress09/10/2023

Many people say that fresh milk helps prevent aging, brightens the skin, and is rich in nutrients. Is that true? Should you use it if you have acne or wear heavy makeup? (Duong, 29 years old, Hanoi).

Reply:

Milk contains lactic acid, an alpha hydroxy acid (AHA), which is found in many other modern skin care products. Lactic acid (found in milk) is a particularly popular ingredient in anti-aging cleansers. Many studies have shown that lactic acid can help remove dead skin cells and stimulate new cell growth. However, there is no evidence from actual studies that milk can clean the face better than water and other mild soaps. Relying on the lactic acid in fresh milk alone does not guarantee a clean, safe way to remove makeup or wash your face.

Using milk daily on the skin can cause acne due to clogged pores or irritation of acne skin. In addition, fresh milk is a rich nutritional environment that increases the growth of bacteria and fungi on the skin. If you are sensitive to lactose (a component in milk), applying a fresh milk mask can cause irritant contact dermatitis, allergies such as rashes, blisters, redness, peeling or other reactions.

Fresh milk cannot clean the skin instead of makeup remover, and can even clog the skin and cause acne due to not removing it thoroughly. Not removing makeup thoroughly often causes rapid skin aging due to residue or remaining makeup (cosmetics). In addition, it can affect the skin's natural exfoliation process, causing dry, rough and dull skin, large pores, acne, and more seriously, dermatitis causing redness and itching.

To protect your skin, you should wash your face at least twice a day with warm water and then rinse with cold water again to tighten pores. Do not overuse cosmetics or squeeze pimples, which can irritate the skin and cause more acne.

Moisturize your skin every day, exfoliate and regularly apply face masks with egg whites, carrot juice with orange juice, tomato mask and potato powder... to reduce oiliness. After applying the mask, rinse with warm water.
