After maintaining a healthy lifestyle for many years, the 56-year-old man was surprised with a diagnosis of myocardial infarction due to a nearly complete blockage of a blood vessel in his heart.

Master, Doctor, CKII Vo Anh Minh, Deputy Head of Interventional Cardiology Department, Cardiovascular Center, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, said that one day after the intervention to revascularize the anterior interventricular artery, Mr. Son (residing in Dak Lak) was cheerful, healthy, and had normal activities as before being hospitalized.

Doctors are performing cardiovascular intervention on patients.

Ultrasound examination showed that the stent was fully expanded and pressed against the vessel wall. The flow through the anterior interventricular artery was smooth, providing adequate blood supply to the myocardium.

The day before, Mr. Son had an angina attack typical of coronary artery disease. The pain was in the middle of the chest accompanied by sweating, occurring at rest, each attack lasting more than 15 minutes, and recurring three times. He went to the local hospital for emergency care, where cardiac enzymes were found to be elevated. After first aid, he was transferred to Tam Anh Hospital.

Doctor Duong Thanh Trung, Cardiovascular Center, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, informed that Mr. Son was admitted to the hospital in a conscious state, with intermittent chest pain, suspected of having a heart attack.

The results of the emergency coronary angiography determined that the anterior interventricular artery was almost completely blocked, the blood flow through it was almost completely blocked. The main blood vessel that nourishes the heart cannot supply enough blood to the heart muscle, this condition can cause acute heart failure, even cardiac arrest, and heart rupture at any time.

Taking his medical history, the doctor noted that Mr. Son had no family history of cardiovascular disease. For many years, he had followed a healthy lifestyle such as regular exercise, no smoking, no alcohol, and a heart-healthy diet.

He had no underlying medical conditions, only mild hypertension well controlled with medication. Therefore, he was very surprised by the diagnosis of myocardial infarction due to coronary artery disease.

Dr. Minh explains that risk factors for coronary artery disease are divided into two categories: uncontrollable and controllable.

The uncontrollable group includes age (the older you are, the more likely you are to have coronary artery disease) and family history (having a father or brother diagnosed with heart disease before age 55, or a mother or sister diagnosed with heart disease before age 65).

Controllable groups include unhealthy lifestyles (smoking, alcohol abuse, lack of exercise, diets high in saturated fat or refined carbohydrates), overweight and obesity, poor control of underlying diseases, etc.

It is possible that Mr. Son has chronic coronary artery stenosis due to age and high blood pressure. The disease progresses silently over many years, and only shows symptoms when the coronary artery is almost completely blocked.

Doctor Trung warns that coronary artery disease spares no one, from the elderly to young people under 45 years old, from people with many risk factors to people who maintain a healthy lifestyle like Mr. Son.

The danger is that the disease often does not cause obvious symptoms until it has progressed to a serious stage, even leading to complications such as acute myocardial infarction. Therefore, screening and early detection play a key role in treating the disease and preventing complications.

Coronary artery disease cannot be completely prevented, but it can be reduced and the disease can be prevented from getting worse. Everyone should quit smoking, whether they are new smokers or have smoked for many years; build a heart-healthy diet that limits fried foods, sweets, salty foods, canned foods, and processed foods;

Prioritize steamed/boiled foods, fruits and green vegetables, fatty fish, olive oil, lean meat, etc.; get enough sleep, 7-9 hours per night; maintain a reasonable weight (BMI

Early screening for coronary artery disease (especially in people with multiple risk factors) to detect the disease early and have timely treatment.
