On February 6, the Traffic Police Department (Ministry of Public Security) said that after 1 month of implementing Decree 168/2024, traffic police nationwide detected and handled 327,349 cases of traffic order and safety violations; revoked driving licenses and professional certificates in 27,820 cases; deducted points from 28,762 driving licenses; and temporarily detained 1,823 cars and 93,766 motorbikes.
Compared to the previous month, the number of processed cases decreased by more than 48,100 (12.8%).
Among the violations, carrying more passengers than the prescribed number decreased the most by 46%, to nearly 2,700 cases; followed by overloading, oversizing, and extending the cargo bed, down 44%, to more than 4,500 cases; and failure to comply with traffic lights decreased by 36.7%, to more than 5,100 cases.
The Traffic Police Department assessed that the handling of violations has decreased significantly compared to before, showing that people's awareness of law compliance has been raised, voluntarily, even in the absence of functional forces.
"People have strictly followed traffic light signals, no longer stopping and parking their vehicles in the wrong lanes or directions, helping to prevent traffic jams from lasting long. After 2-3 traffic lights, traffic can move again. International visitors highly appreciate people's compliance," said a representative of the Traffic Police Department.
In January, there were 1,702 accidents nationwide, killing 917 people and injuring 1,163. Compared to the same period in 2024, the number of accidents decreased by more than 26%, the number of deaths decreased by 1.72%, and the number of injuries decreased by nearly 38%.
Compared to the previous month, the number of accidents decreased by 18.3%, the number of deaths decreased by 9.8% and the number of injuries decreased by more than 20.1%.
The Traffic Police Department also cited health sector data showing that during the 9-day Tet holiday of At Ty 2025, the number of emergency visits due to suspected accidents decreased by 11%, the number of deaths decreased by 28.9%, and the number of patients with serious accidents requiring emergency surgery decreased significantly compared to Tet Giap Thin 2024.
In 2025, traffic police nationwide will strengthen the handling of 6 groups of behaviors that are the main causes of accidents such as alcohol and drug levels; expanding the vehicle's trunk, overloading; speeding, not obeying traffic lights... in the spirit of "no forbidden zones, no exceptions".
The Traffic Police Department will also advise the Ministry of Public Security to direct local police to advise the People's Committees of provinces and cities to review road infrastructure according to their authority, ensuring synchronization and conformity with economic and social development and the increasing speed of vehicles.
Decree 168/2024 stipulates administrative penalties for violations of traffic safety and order in road traffic; deducting and restoring points on driving licenses, including increasing penalties for many violations. For example, the fine for not following traffic lights and driving on sidewalks is increased from 0.8-1 million VND to 4-6 million VND for motorbikes, and from 4-6 million VND to 18-20 million VND for cars.
