Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control (HCDC) informed that in the past week, the number of cases of hand, foot and mouth disease increased by more than 60% compared to the average of the previous 4 weeks.

Ho Chi Minh City Center for Disease Control (HCDC) informed that in the past week, the number of cases of hand, foot and mouth disease increased by more than 60% compared to the average of the previous 4 weeks.

Specifically, in the 10th week of 2025, Ho Chi Minh City recorded 186 cases of hand, foot and mouth disease, an increase of 63.5% compared to the average of the previous 4 weeks. The total number of hand, foot and mouth disease cases accumulated from the beginning of 2025 to week 10 was 1,294 cases. Of which, the districts with the highest number of cases per 100,000 people were District 8, District 6 and Binh Tan District.

Children are being treated for hand, foot and mouth disease at a children's hospital in Ho Chi Minh City.

Master, Doctor Nguyen Dinh Qui, Deputy Head of the Department of Infectious Diseases, Children's Hospital 2 (HCMC) said that hand, foot and mouth disease has two epidemic seasons in a year, starting from April - May and September - October. Currently, hand, foot and mouth disease is at the beginning of the epidemic season, not only affecting infants and young children but also adults. To date, there is no specific treatment for hand, foot and mouth disease, most of which heal on their own after 10 - 14 days. However, the disease can also become serious and lead to death.

Initial symptoms of the disease include fever, poor appetite, irritability and sore throat. About 1-2 days after the fever, the child develops painful ulcers on the tongue, gums and inside the cheeks. The rash is flat or raised red, with blisters concentrated on the palms of the hands or soles of the feet, and may appear on the buttocks and genitals.

According to Dr. Qui, hand, foot and mouth disease is easily spread by direct contact with nasal, throat, saliva and blister secretions or indirect contact with patient secretions and excretions on household utensils, toys, tables, chairs, floors, etc. Children under 5 years old have an incomplete immune system, so they are more susceptible to the disease than older children and adults. Nursery schools and kindergartens are places with a high risk of infection and outbreaks.

To proactively prevent and control hand, foot and mouth disease, the Ministry of Health recommends that people and the community take the following measures: Wash hands regularly with soap under running water many times a day (both adults and children), especially before preparing food, before eating or feeding children, before holding children, after going to the toilet, after changing diapers and cleaning children.

Practice good food hygiene, eat cooked food and drink boiled water; eating utensils must be washed thoroughly before use (preferably soaked in boiling water); ensure clean water is used in daily activities; do not feed children; do not let children eat with their hands, suck their fingers, or suck on toys; do not let children share napkins, handkerchiefs, eating utensils such as cups, bowls, plates, spoons, or toys that have not been sterilized.

Do not let children come into contact with sick or suspected sick people. Use hygienic toilets, and patient excreta and waste must be collected and disposed of in hygienic toilets. When detecting signs of suspected illness in children, take the child to see a doctor or immediately notify the nearest medical facility.

Last week, Ho Chi Minh City recorded 310 cases of dengue fever, down 30.1% compared to the average of the previous 4 weeks. The total number of dengue fever cases accumulated from the beginning of 2025 to week 10 is 4,551 cases. Districts with high number of cases per 100,000 people include Can Gio district, District 7 and Thu Duc City.

Ho Chi Minh City also recorded 276 measles cases with addresses in the city, down 12.2% compared to the average of the previous 4 weeks. The total number of measles cases accumulated from the beginning of the epidemic to week 10/2025 is 7,601 cases. Districts with high number of cases up to week 10/2025 include Binh Chanh district, Binh Tan district and Thu Duc city.
