6 international standard hospitals

The Prime Minister has just issued a decision approving the planning of the healthcare network for the 2021-2030 period, with a vision to 2050.

According to this decision, Hanoi will have 3 hospitals, Ho Chi Minh City will have 2 hospitals and Thua Thien Hue will have 1 hospital planned to become an international-standard hospital.

Previously, in the planning draft, the Ministry of Health proposed that 5 special-class hospitals would be upgraded to modern hospitals on par with some countries in the region and internationally, namely Bach Mai Hospital, Viet Duc Hospital, 108 Military Central Hospital, Cho Ray Hospital and Hue Central Hospital. Thus, according to this decision, Ho Chi Minh City will have 1 more hospital to be upgraded.

Upgrading 6 hospitals to international standards is also on the list of priority investment projects during this period.

The upgrading of 6 hospitals aims to reduce the number of Vietnamese people who have to go abroad for treatment, and at the same time attract foreigners to come to Vietnam for medical examination and treatment. These hospitals are invested in with advanced technology, modern, on par with developed countries in the region and internationally.

The plan aims to achieve 33 hospital beds per 10,000 people, 15 doctors per 10,000 people, 3.4 pharmacists per 10,000 people and 25 nurses per 10,000 people by 2025. By 2030, it will achieve 35 hospital beds per 10,000 people, 19 doctors per 10,000 people, 4 pharmacists per 10,000 people and 33 nurses per 10,000 people.

Vision to 2050, to form a number of modern medical facilities on par with international standards. Strive to achieve 45 hospital beds per 10,000 people, 35 doctors per 10,000 people, 4.5 pharmacists per 10,000 people, 90 nurses per 10,000 people.

At the same time, expand the number of beds in private hospitals, striving for the rate of private beds to account for at least 10% by 2025, 15% by 2030 and 25% by 2050.

According to the Ministry of Health's report, by 2023 there will be 12.5 doctors per 10,000 people and 32 hospital beds per 10,000 people.

Perfecting the primary health care system

The plan also clearly states the plan for developing a network of medical facilities towards ensuring that each region has a general hospital that undertakes regional functions; developing specialized centers in general hospitals; upgrading a number of provincial-level specialized hospitals capable of providing specialized technical services to meet the health care needs of people in the region.

In the field of preventive medicine and public health, plan to establish 3 regional disease control centers linked to existing institutes of hygiene and epidemiology/Pasteur; develop a system of level 3 biosafety laboratories for regional disease control centers.

In the field of testing, inspection, calibration, develop a system of reference laboratories associated with national specialized institutes. Upgrade 2 national centers for bioequivalence assessment to meet international standards.

In the field of medical examination, forensic examination and forensic psychiatric examination, planning to build 1 new regional forensic examination facility in Ho Chi Minh City; 2 regional forensic psychiatric examination facilities in Nghe An and Ho Chi Minh City.

In addition, planning to develop 6 existing regional prenatal and neonatal screening and diagnosis centers in the Red River Delta, North Central and Central Coast, Southeast and Mekong Delta. Forming 2 regional prenatal and neonatal screening and diagnosis centers in the Northern midlands and mountainous areas, and the Central Highlands.

Vision to 2050 will form 2 specialized medical complexes when conditions are sufficient in the North (expected in Bac Ninh) and the South (expected in Long An).
