Chaos of "super cheap" Ngoc Linh Ginseng products
On social networking sites, just by searching for “Ngoc Linh ginseng”, consumers can easily find a bustling ginseng “market” with many products and types, from fresh roots, dried roots, ginseng leaves to even wine and products extracted from ginseng.
Advertisements for Ngoc Linh ginseng are everywhere, with all kinds of origins, and prices are dozens of times cheaper than Ngoc Linh ginseng grown in large growing areas in Nam Tra My district (Quang Nam province) or Tu Mo Rong district (Kon Tum province).
Not only that, many sales sites also "play big" when posting articles that both sell and give away, such as: giving away a 2-year-old Ngoc Linh ginseng plant for 99,000 VND; selling Ngoc Linh ginseng seeds for only 1,000 VND/seed...

In fact, compared to current prices, fresh Ngoc Linh ginseng grown on Ngoc Linh mountain (Nam Tra My district) is priced from 60 million VND to 160 million VND/kg depending on the type. Ngoc Linh ginseng leaves are priced from 10-12 million VND/kg, ginseng flowers are 15-17 million VND/kg, and ginseng seeds are priced from 80-100 million VND/1,000 seeds.
In addition to ginseng of unknown origin, products made from Ngoc Linh ginseng are also being sold widely on the market. Many people spend money with the hope of buying the right good product to use, improve their health but instead buy fake or counterfeit goods.

This not only affects the brand of Ngoc Linh ginseng, but also causes property damage to consumers if they accidentally buy it.
Many ways of "disguising" Ngoc Linh ginseng
Because Ngoc Linh ginseng is so valuable, organizations and individuals have found many ways to profit. They label Ngoc Linh ginseng on tubers that look like Ngoc Linh ginseng such as Panax notoginseng, Chinese ginseng, and Lai Chau ginseng to sell to customers at sky-high prices; forge documents confirming links with local people in growing ginseng, or take advantage of certificates of growing areas and links to buy, sell, and do business.
Authorities regularly inspect and detect many violations related to Ngoc Linh ginseng.
Typically, in early March 2021, Market Management Team No. 2 - Kon Tum Market Management Department coordinated with Dak To District Police to ambush and arrest a case of transporting tubers similar to Kon Tum Ngoc Linh ginseng disguised in orchid boxes. Upon inspection, the authorities discovered 3 foam boxes, including 2 kg of tubers and 12 kg of leaves very similar to Kon Tum Ngoc Linh ginseng. Among the above goods, there were 2 large tubers (with leaves) weighing nearly 300 grams/tuber. The rest were small tubers.

Through investigation, the vehicle owner said that the above goods were all Panax notoginseng roots, transported from the northern provinces to Dak To district. Previously, Market Management Team No. 2 discovered 7 crates with 112 bottles of "Ngoc Linh ginseng leaf" wine, in Dak To town, Dak To district. All of the above wines were produced in Quang Nam, did not have valid invoices and documents and violated the intellectual property rights of Ngoc Linh Kon Tum K5 ginseng wine.
Or most recently, at the Ngoc Linh ginseng and agricultural products market within the framework of the 5th Ngoc Linh ginseng festival organized by the People's Committee of Nam Tra My district (Quang Nam province) on August 1-3, 2023, the authorities discovered about 2kg of Ngoc Linh ginseng with unusual signs, suspected to be fake ginseng, so they made a record and did not allow it to be sold at the market. This quantity of "suspected fake ginseng" was brought to the market by a business located in Tra Cang commune (Nam Tra My district).
Mr. Vo Trung Manh - Chairman of the People's Committee of Tu Mo Rong district (Kon Tum province) said that selling fake ginseng online is very difficult to handle because the seller's address is unclear, often a virtual address so it is difficult to verify and these websites are not registered for business, there are no victims to report and there is no unit to take the lead in handling online buying and selling. “Therefore, there needs to be a set of standards to manage the sale of ginseng online. If we can manage the sale of fake ginseng online, which has been rampant as it has been in the past, fake ginseng will certainly have no place to survive,” emphasized the Chairman of the People’s Committee of Tu Mo Rong district. |
