Regulations on minimum distance when participating in traffic
According to Circular 31/2019/TT-BGTVT, when participating in traffic on the road, vehicle drivers must strictly comply with the regulations on the minimum safe distance between two vehicles (of the type of motor vehicle, specialized motorbike) as stated on road signs.
On roads where there are no signs indicating the minimum safe distance between two vehicles, drivers must comply with the regulations in Article 11 of Circular 31/2019/TT-BGTVT.
Accordingly, when driving on the road, drivers and specialized motorbike drivers must keep a safe distance from the vehicle in front of them; in places where there is a sign "Minimum distance between two vehicles", the distance must not be less than the value indicated on the sign.
Safe distance between two vehicles when participating in traffic on the road:
(1) In dry road conditions, the safe distance for each speed is specified as follows:
Speed (km/h) | Minimum safe distance (m) |
V = 60 | 35 |
60 | 55 |
80 | 70 |
100 | 100 |
When driving at a speed below 60 km/h, the driver must actively maintain a safe distance from the vehicle in front of his vehicle; this distance depends on vehicle density and actual traffic conditions to ensure traffic safety.
(2) When it is raining, foggy, the road surface is slippery, the road has winding terrain, steep passes, limited visibility, the driver must adjust the appropriate safety distance to be greater than the value shown on the sign or the value stated in item (1).
