When is it due to anemia?

Anemia occurs when the body does not have enough red blood cells or hemoglobin, the iron-rich protein found in red blood cells, to properly transport oxygen throughout the body. The result is pale skin and a darker under-eye area. This is especially noticeable in people with thin skin, according to the US health website Healthline .

Dark circles under the eyes can be caused not only by lack of sleep but also by anemia.

Anemia is a common health problem, affecting about 22% of the population. Anemia can range from mild, moderate to severe and comes in different types, depending on the cause.

Some types cause only mild symptoms and are easily treated, while others are inherited and last a lifetime. Severe anemia can be life-threatening. In some cases, anemia can also be a symptom of cancer.

According to experts, dark circles under the eyes, hair loss and brittle nails are common signs of staying up too late. This is because staying up late affects blood circulation, hormones and cell regeneration. However, these symptoms can also be caused by anemia.

Causes of anemia and effective ways to reduce dark circles

One of the most common causes of anemia is iron deficiency. Iron deficiency causes the thin skin around the eyes to darken. This is because when the body lacks iron, it prioritizes essential functions. As a result, areas that are not essential for survival, such as hair and nails, do not receive enough iron and become abnormal first.

In addition to dark circles, hair loss and brittle nails, iron deficiency also has symptoms such as fatigue, chest pain, shortness of breath, dizziness, frequent inflammation, rapid heartbeat, recurring headaches and tinnitus.

Treatment for anemia will depend on the cause. If anemia is caused by an underlying disease, your doctor will treat that disease first. When the disease is treated, the level of hemoglobin, which carries oxygen, in the blood will increase.

If anemia is caused by iron deficiency, the patient will be asked to take iron supplements in the form of tablets, capsules or eat foods rich in iron. In addition, supplementing vitamins B9 and B12 is also very important because these essential vitamins help form red blood cells, according to Healthline.
