This morning, December 1, more than 10,000 athletes flocked to My Dinh National Stadium to participate in the international race across 3 Indochina countries - Viettel Marathon Vietnam. Notably, the race also had the participation of top athletes and former athletes such as Hoang Nguyen Thanh, Nguyen Van Lai, Nguyen Thi Oanh... Previously, the first stage in Luang Prabang was a great success, with a record number of 5,000 athletes participating.
Stage 2 of the international race across 3 Indochina countries, Viettel Marathon 2024 in Vietnam attracted more than 10,000 athletes to participate.
At the Viettel Marathon Vietnam stage, the pleasant weather contributed to "warming up" the athletes. In addition, the new, relatively straight and spacious competition route helped the runners stride comfortably.
In the most anticipated race, the advanced full marathon, both the men's and women's competitions were extremely exciting. On the 42.194 km men's race, record holder Hoang Nguyen Thanh and his senior Nguyen Van Lai competed dramatically from the first meters until the finish line in My Dinh Stadium.
Hoang Nguyen Thanh won the 42.195 km distance of the Viettel Marathon 2024 international race in Hanoi this morning, December 1.
In the end, Nguyen Thanh surpassed his senior at the end to finish first, becoming the champion of the full marathon distance, Viettel Marathon Vietnam with a time of 2 hours 28 minutes 21 seconds. Meanwhile, Nguyen Van Lai finished right behind, only 1 second behind Nguyen Thanh's time.
Right after the dramatic competition between Nguyen Thanh and Van Lai, the women's full marathon race witnessed a convincing performance by record holder Nguyen Thi Oanh. Last September, Nguyen Thi Oanh conquered the Techcombank Hanoi International Marathon with a time of 2 hours 44 minutes 20 seconds despite heavy rain, thereby setting a new national record. Nguyen Thi Oanh broke the old record of Hoang Ngoc Hoa (2 hours 44 minutes 52 seconds, set at the international marathon in Hong Kong in early 2024).
Nguyen Thi Oanh "turned around" at the last minute and set a new spectacular record.
And this morning (December 1), once again Nguyen Thi Oanh surpassed Ngoc Hoa to win the Viettel Marathon. Oanh finished with a time of 2 hours 39 minutes 49 seconds, while Ngoc Hoa finished with a time of 2 hours 47 minutes 42 seconds.
It is worth mentioning that because she had just focused on competing in the national athletics championship in mid-November, Nguyen Thi Oanh initially only aimed for the half marathon distance. But at the last minute, Oanh changed her mind and competed in the full marathon, demonstrating her class as a top runner in Vietnam as well as in Southeast Asia.
