Anh Ba’s Pho restaurant is often called the cheapest beef pho restaurant in Hanoi. Because a bowl of pho here costs only 25,000 VND. Those who want to eat more can order a bowl of 30,000 VND, 35,000 VND or 40,000 VND. But for many people, a bowl of pho at 25,000 VND is still enough to fill their stomachs and is a warm breakfast.
The most famous here is still pho tai lan.
Mr. Ba said: "I sell at my house, I don't have to pay rent so I sell at a reasonable price. This price of 25,000 VND is what I've been selling at my house for many years now. Before it was 20,000 VND, then it increased to 22,000 VND, now it's 25,000 VND, the price hasn't increased in years."
A bowl of rare beef pho costs only 25,000 VND.
There are three main types of pho here: rare beef pho, rare beef pho, and rare beef pho. A bowl of pho is served with quite a lot of noodles, and at 25,000 VND, the amount of meat is moderate, but it does not look "scarce". Rare beef pho is the dish that customers order the most. The meat is stir-fried quickly over high heat with fragrant fried garlic. The beef is stir-fried just right so it is soft and fragrant, and the broth here is also quite rich. The green onions are added just right, enough to make the bowl of beef pho delicious and well-rounded. The fried dough sticks here are also delicious, lightly crispy on the outside and soft and spongy on the inside, not the crispy kind. A portion of 6 fried dough sticks is sold for 10,000 VND.
The bowl on the left and below costs 35,000 VND so it has more meat.
Many of the customers at the restaurant are workers and retirees, so the restaurant keeps the price of pho like that so that everyone can enjoy it. Mr. Ba's wife confided: "Life is difficult now, so I try to keep this price, so everyone can eat. My family doesn't have to rent a place, so it's better. Many customers ask why the price is so cheap, why don't we increase the price? Whenever I feel like I can still stand the heat, I try to keep this price."
Many Hanoians have the habit of eating pho in the morning.
Sells about 400 bowls of pho every day and only opens in the morning and absolutely does not sell anything else.
Mr. Ba's pho shop has been selling pho in alley 85, 8/3 street since 2009, but not many people know that Mr. Ba has been selling pho since 1998. Up to now, Mr. Ba, 56 years old, has been in the pho business for nearly 27 years. Mr. Ba shared: "This family has been selling pho since 1998, and at this shop since 2009. Before, we sold pho elsewhere, then my family gave that place to my brother. I taught my brother and his wife the profession, they also sell pho there like this."
Mr. Ba, the owner of the pho restaurant and also the person who has been making pho for customers for decades.
At his house, which is also the place where pho is cooked and sold to customers, Mr. Ba and his wife hang around here every day, one making pho, stir-frying meat, the other taking orders from customers and collecting money. Despite the large number of customers, the couple is always happy.
Mr. Ba quickly made pho for the customers.
Sitting on the first floor, customers will be able to watch Mr. Ba skillfully stir-fry pho. Beef is put into a large pan and stirred continuously, sometimes the fire even flares up. The beef is stir-fried in batches, and when finished, it is stir-fried again, so that the meat is always hot.
The beef is stir-fried until just cooked, soft, fragrant and flavorful.
In addition to the seats on the first floor, customers can sit on the opposite side, or go up to the second floor. The second floor area is actually like a loft, providing a true "eating at home" experience with an old dining table and the owner's belongings around.
Guests can choose to eat on the first floor or go upstairs if there is no more room downstairs.
For many years, this pho restaurant has only been open in the morning, and although it is always crowded, it does not open until noon. The restaurant opens around 5:30 or 6:00 and closes around 9:30 or until it is sold out. Therefore, many people wake up a little late and when they get there, there is no more pho to eat.
In the morning after selling, the restaurant will prepare the broth for the next day. When asked what is the secret to making the pho restaurant so popular, Mr. Ba said: "I make everything real, beef bones, beef, and traditional spices. The important thing is that I clean the bones to make the broth clean, so that there is no 'bad' smell of beef."
In addition, the beef at the restaurant is also fresh beef, taken on the same day to ensure deliciousness. Every day, the restaurant uses about 20kg of rare beef, 5kg of cooked meat, and about 70-75kg of pho noodles.
For many people in Hanoi, eating pho for breakfast has become a habit. On days when the weather in Hanoi is still chilly, there is nothing better than going out for a bowl of pho in the morning.
