Ban But, Nam Xuan commune, less than 10km from the center of Quan Hoa district, is home to more than 100 Thai ethnic households. From above, Ban But appears with traditional stilt houses, surrounded by primeval mountains and forests. Visitors can walk through winding mountain roads, immerse themselves in the lives of the indigenous people, experience farming, brocade weaving and enjoy specialties such as hill chicken, rock snails, bamboo rice, and can wine.
What is special about But village is that visitors can experience more types of camping tourism by sitting on a motorbike up to Pha Day lake. The lake is located on a mountain at an altitude of 1,200m above sea level, about 2.2ha wide, the water is clear all year round, like a giant mirror in the middle of nature. According to the people of But village, in the past, the area around the lake was just a low-lying area with streams flowing into it. Later, people renovated and expanded it into a reservoir for irrigation. Today, Pha Day lake is not only a beautiful landscape, but also plays an important role in providing domestic water and agricultural production for people in the area, with a capacity of more than 200,000m3 of water. Here, visitors can enjoy a boat ride on the lake, experience fishing and immerse themselves in nature. With fresh air and the activity of setting up tents to sleep outdoors overnight, it will bring memorable moments of relaxation.
In the early days of the spring of At Ty 2025, But village welcomed more visitors than usual. Ms. Nguyen Thi Hanh, from Thanh Hoa city, shared: “In the early spring, my family often chooses a short trip for the children to have fun. This year, my family traveled to the West of Thanh Hoa to participate in community tourism in But village, Nam Xuan commune. The interesting thing when coming here is the harmony between the natural scenery and the cultural values imbued with the national identity of the indigenous Thai people.”
Ms. Pham Thi Nhi, Vice Chairwoman of Nam Xuan Commune People's Committee, said: Ban But is the first village in Nam Xuan commune to be recognized as meeting NTM standards in 2018. Implementing the community tourism development project, Nam Xuan commune has selected 5 Thai ethnic households in Ban But to pilot homestay tourism services. Up to now, community tourism in Ban But is a highlight in the hearts of tourists when coming to Quan Hoa mountainous district."

In addition to But village, Quan Hoa district also possesses many attractive tourism resources, notably with a rich, diverse and pristine forest ecosystem. Along with Pu Hu Nature Reserve, Pu Luong Nature Reserve and Nam Dong Rare Coniferous Tree Conservation Area, nature also favors Quan Hoa with a system of rivers interspersed with majestic mountains with many beautiful caves such as Phi cave, Co Phuong cave, Co Luong cave, Na cave... In particular, Co Phuong cave in Sai village, Phu Le commune has been ranked as a national historical relic. Not only possessing natural beauty, Quan Hoa district is also a place of cultural exchange of Thai, Muong, Kinh, Mong and Hoa ethnic groups. This diversity is reflected in the traditional occupations, folk culture and unique cuisine of each ethnic group. In particular, the district still preserves many valuable intangible cultural heritage values, typically the Muong Ca Da Festival, which was recognized as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism in 2019.
In order to promote the above potential advantages, on April 26, 2019, Thanh Hoa Provincial People's Committee issued Decision No. 1574/QD-UBND approving the Project "Developing community tourism in Quan Hoa district to 2025, with a vision to 2030". This is considered an important condition for the development of Quan Hoa tourism. Based on the approved project, in recent years, the district has focused on developing diverse types of tourism, such as spiritual cultural tourism, community tourism, and experiential discovery tourism. With many outstanding tourism products attracting tourists such as exploring terraced fields, exploring Pha Day lake, Vinh Quang lake, experiencing Hoi Xuan night market, experiencing ethnic culture, experiencing cuisine... In particular, the highlight is the discovery tours for tourists who love adventure, exploring and learning about biodiversity and ecology, on the top of Pu Hu; Tour down the Ma River for tourists who are passionate about rowing, rafting, and fishing on the river.
Mr. Le Huu Quyet, Head of the Department of Culture and Information of Quan Hoa district, affirmed: "To effectively exploit tourism potential, in the coming time, the district will focus on promoting investment in tourism infrastructure. At the same time, implementing solutions to develop and promote local tourism, combined with maintaining and preserving indigenous cultural values, it is expected that in the near future, this will be a key economic sector of Quan Hoa district".
