Tuan Tu village currently has 550 households with 2,365 Cham people. The villagers have a prosperous life thanks to cultivating 65 hectares of green asparagus and 65 hectares of rice fields with 2 crops per year combined with raising livestock. The whole Tuan Tu village has only 5 poor households, accounting for 0.91% of the total households in the village.

This achievement is due in no small part to the "guide" Party Cell Secretary, Prestigious Person Kieu Thi Khue. The Cham people of Tuan Tu village are very proud that for the first time, a female leader of their village representing Cham women in Ninh Thuan province was honored to go to the capital to attend the 2nd "Village Support" Program in 2024 and was awarded the Certificate of "Typical Prestigious Person in Border and Island Areas".

Sharing about the promotion of the "matriarchal" role of Cham women from ancient times to the present, Ms. Kieu Thi Khue said: "Since ancient times, Cham women have always been the "leaders" in making important decisions in the family and clan.

When Cham women participate in social work, they must have the consent and support of their husbands and children. This ensures harmony in the roles of wife towards husband, mother towards children and grandmother towards grandchildren. At the same time, they wholeheartedly take care of village affairs out of love for their homeland, wishing to contribute their efforts to the development of prosperity and wealth of the Cham village.

“Golden hands”

In two famous traditional craft villages of the Cham people, My Nghiep brocade weaving village and Bau Truc pottery village, Phuoc Dan town, Ninh Phuoc district, Cham women are the mainstay labor force in preserving and developing the craft villages.

On November 29, 2022, the art of Cham pottery making was inscribed by UNESCO on the List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Need of Urgent Safeguarding. To preserve, maintain, and pass on the technique of making Cham pottery through many generations, the important role of women in Bau Truc pottery village is played.

Artisan Dang Thi Hoa preserves and passes on Cham pottery making techniques

We visited the pottery production facility of the “Golden Hand” artisan Dang Thi Hoa in the middle of Bau Truc village. She is the youngest daughter of a family with a tradition of pottery making passed down from mother to son. According to Cham custom, Hoa lives in the ancestral house built by her parents on an area of 500m2.

As the youngest daughter, Hoa takes care of ancestor worship according to family customs. Thanks to pottery making, Hoa has an average income of over 10 million VND/month; in months when she receives many orders, she earns 20 million VND. Hoa's 4 daughters have all been taught the craft of Cham pottery making, preserving the family's traditional culture.

The spouse of artisan Dang Thi Hoa, Dang Nang Nghiem, shared: “The matriarchal system has existed for a long time in the social life of the Cham people. Since I was born in Bau Truc village, I have seen that my grandmother and mother play an extremely important role in the family and clan. I am a companion and a strong assistant to my wife in the work of making pottery. As for all important matters in family life, although the couple discusses and agrees, the final decision belongs to the wife.”
