Through medical history, it was recorded that the patient had a traffic accident in Tay Ninh, was taken to a local hospital, then transferred to a hospital in Ho Chi Minh City, and then transferred to Gia An 115 Hospital.
On June 27, specialist doctor Vo Phuoc Minh (Department of Surgery, Gia An 115 Hospital) said that the patient was transferred in a state of pain and swelling in many areas of the face, with a 5cm long wound in the neck that had been stitched, a fracture of the right frontal bone and eye socket, and a closed fracture of the left forearm and both femurs that had just been temporarily immobilized with a cast.
"The patient suffered from complex fractures in multiple locations at the same time, especially the left femur fractured in 2 levels into 3 segments. In this case, the patient is very susceptible to shock due to blood loss or pain if the fracture is not fixed early. If multiple surgeries are performed, the patient will have more risks and will take longer to recover. Therefore, the doctors decided to perform a special 3-in-1 surgery and bone fusion surgery at 4 fracture locations at the same time," said Dr. Minh.

Bone fusion surgery at 4 fracture sites at the same time
Combined surgery helps patients avoid multiple surgeries, shortens the time, helps patients recover quickly and reduces the economic burden. During the surgery, the patient underwent surgery in turn: bone fusion with intramedullary nailing at the fracture site of the middle third of the right femur, bone fusion surgery for a fracture of the distal end of the left radius, and bone fusion surgery with screws and plates at the mid-shaft of the left thigh.
In particular, because the left femur was broken in 2 layers and 3 segments, the doctor had to use a long splint and many screws to fix the bone. The surgery lasted a total of 4 hours and was successful. After surgery, the patient was treated with antibiotics to relieve pain, reduce swelling and continue to monitor other injuries caused by the traffic accident. 2 days after surgery, the patient's pain was significantly reduced and physical therapy began. The patient was discharged from the hospital in stable health condition.
According to Dr. Minh, the advantage of bone fusion surgery with a fluoroscopy (C-Arm) is that the surgeon can perform surgery while viewing the image of the broken bone directly on the screen to adjust the broken bone to an ideal state. There is no need to make a large incision to clearly see the broken bone like with conventional surgery, the small incision leaves almost no scar. After surgery, the patient will have less pain, shorter recovery time, and much less risk of infection.
However, after bone fusion surgery, patients must pay attention to physical therapy and rehabilitation exercises as instructed.
