With many creative ways, performing arts in Da Nang city recently have impressed tourists.

Continuously update products

For the past 2 years, Nguyen Hien Dinh Tuong Theater has brought many Tuong performances to serve international tourists, as part of the art performance program "Heritage Road" at Terminal T2 of Da Nang Airport. The echoes of a hospitable coastal city are multiplied, when they witness special excerpts of Tuong - a traditional art of Vietnam.

Former Director of Nguyen Hien Dinh Tuong Theater - Meritorious Artist Tran Ngoc Tuan, said that the program "bringing Tuong to the airport" has a performance time of about 30 minutes (every Thursday and Saturday).
According to Mr. Tuan, promoting plays at the airport is very effective, creating a good impression on international tourists, foreign news agencies... Hotels in Da Nang have also connected with the theater to bring plays to the hotel for tourists to watch.

To have products that create good effects, nearly 10 years ago, Nguyen Hien Dinh Tuong Theater promoted this intangible cultural heritage through the program "Bringing Tuong to the streets".

After the pilot night (July 12, 2015), the program has been performed regularly on Sunday evenings on the east bank of the Han River Bridge (from April to the end of September) with 13 concise and easy-to-understand excerpts of plays such as: "Doi hon Dat Ky", "Nhi khi Chu Du", "Lo Lam de co"...

Together "going to the streets", the heritage of Bai Choi held on the east bank of Dragon Bridge every weekend has become a typical cultural product, attracting a large number of tourists to participate.

The self-efforts of individuals and organizations that are the subjects of heritage practice have contributed to the vitality of intangible cultural forms. For example, after being recognized as a national intangible cultural heritage in 2019, the artisan of Nam O fish sauce village (Lien Chieu district) - Mr. Bui Thanh Phu (owner of the Huong Lang Co fish sauce brand) has had many creative ways to promote and distribute the product.

In 2016, Mr. Phu opened a fish sauce factory to preserve the profession and then combined it with tours to welcome visitors to visit and experience. "I saw many tourists interested in fish sauce, so I came up with the idea of putting fish sauce in small 60ml bottles for easy portability," Mr. Phu said. "Recently, I launched fish sauce powder to make cups of fish sauce coffee that tourists love."

Increase destination connectivity

A new journey, giving wings to the Nam O fish sauce brand to develop more strongly, from the project "Preserving Nam O fish sauce craft village associated with tourism development in Da Nang city" implemented in the past 3 years. The positive results from the project open up opportunities for the craft village to step into the "smokeless industry".

Secretary of Lien Chieu District Party Committee Nguyen Ha Bac said that the locality has requested the Department of Tourism of Da Nang City to speed up the process of forming tourist attractions and homestay tourism models to attract tourists to visit and travel to Nam O fish sauce village. The district also requested the Department of Science and Technology of Da Nang City to continue to support and guide the management and development of the "Nam O" geographical indication for fish sauce products.

Promoting the value of intangible cultural heritage associated with tourism, turning them into tourism products welcomed by the public, Da Nang has had many policies and guidelines to support the preservation of these performing arts.

At the city level, the plan to implement cultural and festival activities on both sides of the Han River has been implemented for nearly 10 years. This is considered an important "corridor" to bring heritages such as tuong, bai choi, etc. to perform. Nguyen Hien Dinh Tuong Theater also has a project to improve operational efficiency, in which it is determined that in addition to its main function and task of preserving and promoting the art of tuong, it must also create products to serve the people and tourists; and be partly self-sufficient in operating costs.

Chairman of the Da Nang Tourism Association Cao Tri Dung assessed that foreign tourists, especially those from Europe, Australia, America, etc., are very interested in learning about local culture. Therefore, the 7 national intangible heritages (bai choi, tuong xu Quang, Non Nuoc Ngu Hanh Son stone craft, Nam O fish sauce making, Cau Ngu festival, Quan The Am Ngu Hanh Son festival, Tuy Loan rice paper making) are valuable assets for Da Nang to combine with other destinations to build unique tourism products.

Da Nang is planning to create a river tourism route to take visitors to visit and experience Tuy Loan rice paper village, combined with visiting the communal house, ancient houses, experiencing La Huong vegetable village, eating Quang noodles, listening to Bai Choi singing... Or, Nam O fish sauce village combined with a tour of the newly restored Hai Van Quan relic site.

“Intangible heritage from a cultural perspective is very valuable, but to exploit it for tourism requires the cooperation of many parties. In particular, it is necessary to have investment from the state and coordination from the community so that businesses can boldly invest in order to create sustainable product lines, help extend the length of stay, and diversify the source of visitors…” - Mr. Dung said.

This will probably be an important consultation channel for Quang Nam to promote the transformation of intangible cultural values into unique tourism products to attract tourists.
