Marina development strategy in Quang Nam
The orientation for developing marine tourism in the Quang Nam planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050, identifies the eastern region of the province, including Hoi An, Duy Xuyen, and Nui Thanh, as a driving force with potential for developing marinas thanks to favorable natural conditions and diverse landscapes. This strategy is consistent with the trend of developing high-end and sustainable tourism, targeting the domestic and international high-income customer segment.
In that context, the People's Committee of Quang Nam province has directed to add marina points to the general urban planning of Duy Hai - Duy Nghia, Duy Xuyen district, in order to create a legal basis for the development of marina projects in the future. This direction was given in the conclusion notice of the leaders of the Provincial People's Committee at the meeting to listen to the report on the dossier of the Duy Hai - Duy Nghia urban planning project held at the end of March 2025.
Potential for developing cruise tourism in Quang Nam
Quang Nam has many advantages to develop cruise services, including:
- The coastal terrain is diverse with many wide estuaries and good water stability, especially in areas such as Hoi An, Duy Xuyen, and Nui Thanh.
- The system of rivers and canals connecting the sea and the mainland creates favorable conditions for the development of a diverse system of marinas.
- Rich in natural landscapes and cultural heritage, Hoi An is a world-famous tourist destination.
- Growing demand from the luxury travel market, especially from international tourists and the domestic wealthy class.
Basic information about the project
The marina and logistics project for yachts (Maria Quang Nam) is proposed at the foot of Cua Dai bridge, Duy Nghia commune, Duy Xuyen district.
The project aims to build an anchorage area and logistics area to serve the yachts of international yacht owners, contributing to creating a new highlight in the development of tourism and marine economy of Quang Nam province.
Scale: The project is divided into three phases:
- Phase 1 serves 200 ships;
- Phase 2 increases capacity to 500 ships;
- Phase 3 reaches 1,000 ships.
The total research area is about 10-15ha, of which the water surface area is about 10ha with a water surface length of 300-500m.
The current land use status of the project area is mainly agricultural land and residential land managed by the state and local people.
Project development progress
On February 15, 2025, a working delegation of the Quang Nam Provincial People's Committee led by the Standing Vice Chairman of the Provincial People's Committee Phan Thai Binh had a working session in Ho Chi Minh City with Bien Viet Joint Stock Company on the plan to build an anchorage and logistics area to serve international cruise ships in Quang Nam. The meeting was attended by Mr. Do Xuan Dien - Chairman of the Southern Quang Nam Business Association and consultants from France.
At the meeting, Mr. Nguyen Ngoc Dung - Director of Bien Viet Joint Stock Company, emphasized the potential of Quang Nam's sea tourism with many scenic spots, especially in areas such as Hoi An, Duy Xuyen, Nui Thanh - places with favorable natural conditions for the development of marinas.
Standing Vice Chairman of Quang Nam Provincial People's Committee Phan Thai Binh acknowledged the comments and emphasized the importance of carefully examining factors such as planning, hydrology, culture, inland traffic law, maritime law and environmental impact assessment to choose the most suitable location for the project. According to the plan, before March 15, 2025, the relevant parties will determine the official location for the project and the Department of Planning and Investment will submit it to the Provincial People's Committee for approval.
Spatial development orientation
In the process of completing the general urban planning project of Duy Hai - Duy Nghia, the People's Committee of Duy Xuyen district is required to study and supplement marina points to ensure aesthetics, environment, and suitability with the orientation of local tourism development. At the same time, the district needs to study, receive and evaluate investment proposals of investors, ensuring compliance with the appraisal results of the Department of Construction and compliance with regulations and standards on construction planning, technical infrastructure, and urban society.
Potential and development opportunities
According to Knight Frank Real Estate Consulting Company (UK), the super-rich class in Vietnam in the period 2014-2024 increased rapidly, ranking first in Asia (430%), opening up attractive potential for fields serving this class, including yacht services. After luxury goods and supercars, owning a million-dollar yacht is a new trend, promoting the demand for real estate near marinas.
Real estate with marinas is really scarce, because not every place with rivers or seas has ideal conditions to build a marina. Therefore, the value of marina projects is of super product level and has great attraction to investors and high-end customers.
Competitive advantages of the eastern Duy Xuyen region
Duy Xuyen District is located in the Eastern region of Quang Nam Province - identified as the economic development driving force of the province in the provincial planning for the period 2021-2030, with a vision to 2050. The project's location near Cua Dai Bridge creates favorable conditions for connection with Hoi An - one of the top tourist destinations in Vietnam and the world.
Quang Nam is also implementing a 10 billion VND incentive program to stimulate tourism in 2025 with the theme "Quang Nam - Green Heritage", creating favorable conditions for promoting and attracting tourists to the province, which will indirectly support the development of high-end tourism projects such as marinas.
Marina development trends in Da Nang
Da Nang City also has a plan to call for private investment in an international marina in the period of 2020-2025. The city has approved planning for two areas: Bach Dang Street area with a land area of 20,982m² and Nhu Nguyet Street area with a planning area of 21,000m², of which the land area for marina construction is 10,000m² and the area of wharf and water surface is 11,000m². Da Nang's planning and development experience can provide useful lessons for the Marina and Yacht Logistics Area Project in Duy Xuyen.
The marina and logistics project for yachts in Duy Xuyen district represents the trend of developing high-end and sustainable tourism in Quang Nam. With its strategic location, abundant tourism potential, and strong support from the local government, the project has many prospects for success and makes a significant contribution to the socio-economic development of Duy Xuyen district in particular and Quang Nam province in general.
