On March 18, information from Can Tho Central General Hospital said that recently, doctors in the respiratory department performed a bronchoscopy to remove a foreign object, a piece of duck bone , deep in a man's lung. The bone fragment had been in the body for too long, causing inflammation in the lungs, leading to complications such as coughing, prolonged chest pain, and severe pneumonia.

The patient is Mr. NVH (58 years old), in Chau Thanh district, Hau Giang province . He was transferred to Can Tho Central General Hospital in a state of exhaustion, coughing a lot with white phlegm, sometimes mixed with blood. According to his family, this condition has recurred many times for about a year now, the family has taken him to many places for examination and treatment but the symptoms have not improved.

At the hospital, a respiratory medicine doctor examined and assessed the patient's condition. Based on the chest X-ray results, the doctor saw a solid mass, forming a cavity, in the lower lobe of the right lung. At the same time, the chest MRI results showed a foreign body in the bronchus, lower lobe of the right lung.

The team ordered a flexible bronchoscopy (with anesthesia) to remove the foreign object from the patient. After inserting the endoscope, the doctor found a hard, rough foreign object in the lower lobe of the right lung, with inflammation and edema around it... the foreign object removed was a bone nearly 2.5x1.5cm long, with a very sharp tip.

After endoscopy, the doctor continued to remove the second foreign object, which was also a smaller bone fragment (1x1cm) in the lower lobe of the left lung. After removing the foreign object, the inflammation was cleaned and the procedure was successful after 30 minutes.

After one day of endoscopy to remove the foreign object, the patient is now awake, the lungs are well ventilated, and the symptoms of chest pain and cough have significantly decreased.

The patient recalled that about 2 years ago, he had eaten duck meat and got a bone stuck in his throat. However, he did not have any special symptoms afterwards so he did not go for a check-up. The cough and occasional difficulty breathing only appeared about 1 year ago and recurred many times.

According to Dr. Cao Thi My Thuy - Head of the Department of Respiratory Medicine, Can Tho Central General Hospital - this case is a foreign body in the trachea that has been forgotten for a long time (a foreign object falls into and gets stuck in the trachea).

These types of foreign bodies can cause complications such as mild to severe respiratory failure , even respiratory arrest. There are also chronic complications, commonly recurrent bronchial pneumonia infections, and coughing up blood.

Therefore, when eating, playing (in both the elderly and children), if there is a bone stuck in the throat or a cough, you should go to the hospital immediately. In cases of persistent cough, frequent phlegm recurrence, and unknown cause, you should go to a hospital with a respiratory specialist to find the cause and receive timely treatment.
