More than 160 unexploded bombs dating back to World War II have been found beneath a children's playground in the northern city of Newcastle, England.

The incident occurred in the town of Wooler, about 72 km north of Newcastle (UK). Initially, the Wooler Parish Council conducted a survey of the area after an unexploded bomb was discovered on January 14 during construction work to expand the playground.

The survey was scheduled to begin on January 23 and last two days. However, on the first day, field staff discovered a total of 65 unexploded bombs, each weighing about 4.5 kg, along with many smoke canisters. The bombs still had their fuses intact when they were discovered inside the park.

The bomb is believed to be a wartime training bomb. The shocking discovery has delayed the completion of the new amusement park, which is expected to resume once the area is secure.

"Although these are practice bombs, they still contain explosives and with such a large quantity, a team of experts is needed to ensure the area is safe for construction contractors and residents," said local authorities.

The initial bombs discovered were collected and moved to a safe area. Despite bad weather, the excavation continued into the second day.

When the survey area was expanded to more than 5 km², 90 more unexploded bombs were found, bringing the total number of bombs to more than 160.

As a result, plans to expand the playground have been put on hold until bomb disposal experts have cleared the entire area. Work is expected to resume this spring.

“We are delighted to be able to support the town and local community in developing the new play area, which is an important amenity for residents and visitors,” said a Northumberland County Council spokesperson.

"Obviously, this bomb discovery was unexpected, but we have found additional funding to ensure that the mine clearance work is carried out safely," the official added.
