Dong Thap Muoi farmers increase income by selling straw

Mr. Nguyen Van Dung in Tan Hung district (Long An) said that the demand for straw consumption is increasing to serve many purposes. After harvesting rice, the straw is rolled into rolls of about 20kg and transported to shore to be sold to traders from other places who come to buy and take it to other places for consumption.

According to local people, in recent years, the demand for straw rolls for farming and livestock farming has increased, so straw rolls in the Dong Thap Muoi region of Long An province are increasingly in demand. Currently, straw is purchased at a price of about 17,000 VND/roll, transported to the provinces for sale at a price ranging from 22,000 - 25,000 VND/roll, sometimes more than 30,000 VND/roll.

A machine can roll 600 - 700 straw rolls/day. After deducting expenses, the machine owner earns about 2 - 3 million VND/day. Transporters and resellers have much higher incomes.

However, the biggest concern of those who collect and trade straw is that straw is flammable, and even a cigarette butt can burn it, causing great damage. In Tan Hung district (Long An), last year's dry season, there was also a fire in a straw warehouse.

Up to now, farmers in Tan Hung district have harvested nearly 16,000 hectares of winter-spring rice 2024 - 2025, many rice areas have been harvested, farmers roll straw to sell to traders.

However, some households still burn straw in the fields. It is currently the dry season, the weather is hot, so burning straw in the fields will increase the risk of fire.
