CNN news agency quoted Alabama law enforcement as saying in a post on social network X that the deceased was only 18 years old and was not a student at Tuskegee University .
At least 16 people were injured in the incident, including at least 12 with gunshot wounds, the agency said.
Tuskegee University said several injured people, including students, were being treated at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika and Baptist Hospital South in Montgomery. Authorities did not say exactly how many were injured or provide information about their conditions.
It is not yet clear who fired the shots or what led to the incident. Police have not announced any arrests.
The incident occurred as a large crowd gathered at the university on Saturday evening to celebrate Tuskegee’s 100th Welcome Week. Law enforcement “secured the scene” and the Alabama Bureau of Investigation is investigating.
The FBI has joined the investigation into the shooting and said it is seeking information from the public, as well as any video footage it may have. The agency has set up an online website for people to upload videos.
