The Intergenerational Self-Help Club of Gia Thuong village, Gia Hoa commune (Gia Vien district) is one of 25 Intergenerational Self-Help Clubs in the province that benefit from Project VIE688 - Development and expansion of non-communicable disease prevention interventions in Vietnam.
After more than 2 years of operation during the Project period, the Club has received attention and support from Party committees at all levels, authorities, and the Representative Board of the Elderly Association at all levels for sustainable development.
Up to now, the Club has 79 members. The Club is equipped with funds; facilities; participates in training on non-communicable disease prevention interventions... Thanks to that, the Club has achieved many comprehensive results in basic activities such as: Taking good care of the health of Club members; screening and evaluating non-communicable disease prevention indicators such as: blood pressure, diabetes; activities to increase income for members; doing a good job of mobilizing resources; self-help activities and community support; culture and arts...
The rich, useful and practical contents also attracted a large number of elderly people and local communities to participate, contributing to improving the health and spiritual life of the elderly in Gia Hoa commune.
In Yen Mo district, activities to encourage and create conditions for the elderly to develop the economy and improve their lives have also been effectively implemented by localities.
Accordingly, the Elderly Association at all levels of Yen Mo district has effectively implemented the movement "Setting good examples, eliminating hunger and reducing poverty, and getting rich legitimately". The emulation movement for good production and business continues to develop in both breadth and depth, creating a spread in many industries and fields, attracting many elderly people to participate.
The whole district has over 1,300 elderly people participating in labor, production, and service business; 146 elderly people directly involved in production are farm and business owners; 182 elderly people are good at doing business at the commune, district, and provincial levels; many members have knowledge, experience, and know how to apply scientific and technical advances in production, achieving high economic efficiency.
Not only enriching themselves, many elderly people also create jobs for local workers. A typical example is Mr. Dinh Van Di, 61 years old, a member of the Elderly Association of Dan Moi hamlet, Yen Dong commune, who has succeeded with a comprehensive economic model including raising pigs for meat, raising fish for meat and fish for breeding, selling animal feed, participating in the Yen Dong Lake fishing cooperative... with a total income of over 210 million VND/year.
Ms. Vu Thi Huong, 61 years old, is a member of the Elderly Association of Thang Dong village, Khanh Thuong commune, who has built a comprehensive livestock model with 7 ponds to raise fish, ducks, chickens, etc., creating regular jobs for 5 workers. Total income after deducting expenses reaches over 1 billion VND/year, often helping members in times of difficulty and hardship...

Currently, there are 138,246 elderly people in the province, accounting for 12.34% of the population. The majority of the elderly are well cared for by their families and communities. The elderly have set a good example in propagating and mobilizing their children, families and people to implement the Party's guidelines and policies, the State's policies and laws, local regulations, village conventions and conventions in residential areas.
Many elderly people have promoted their intelligence, life experience, production labor, study, participated in environmental protection, built new rural areas, civilized urban areas, built cultural families, model families, encouraged learning, encouraged talents, built a learning society, learning units, and actively participated in building a strong grassroots political system.
However, in reality, there is still a group of poor elderly people and elderly people in difficult circumstances who need social security policies from the Party, the State, the province and the joint efforts of all levels, sectors and the community.
Mr. Vu Xuan Dang, Vice Chairman of the Provincial Association of the Elderly, said: In recent years, the elderly in the province have fully and promptly benefited from the Party and State's policies for the elderly; have been cared for, and their quality of life has been improved from mobilized resources... In particular, the elderly in our province have also benefited from many meaningful programs and projects.
Recently, Ninh Binh is one of the first 6 provinces and cities in the country to receive and implement Project VIE085 "Supporting the Disadvantaged Elderly through Replicating the Intergenerational Self-Help Club Model". The project will be implemented for 03 years (2023-2025). The goal is to establish 9 Intergenerational Self-Help Clubs each year.
Through these models, the goal is to contribute to improving the quality of life of the elderly, especially increasing income and improving health. At the same time, calling for and mobilizing support resources to continue establishing and expanding the activities of intergenerational self-help clubs.
Previously, the Provincial Elderly Association Representative Board and the Community Health Investment Joint Stock Company signed a Memorandum of Cooperation on elderly health care in Ninh Binh province.
The content of coordination between the two sides will be specified through activities such as: Training, fostering knowledge and skills in self-care for the Club's Board of Directors to enhance the ability to direct and guide health care activities for members of the Intergenerational Self-Help Club in the locality; training and guiding the Board of Directors on therapeutic exercise methods such as: Meridian Exercises, Spinal Therapy Exercises, Cerebral Blood Enhancement Exercises, Blood Pressure Stabilization Exercises, etc.
In particular, the company will support Intergenerational Clubs to borrow 2-5 blood pressure monitors; borrow 3-5 diabetes testing machines, give diabetes test strips to measure blood sugar for members; borrow 3-5 MF5-08 physical therapy machines.
For the newly established Inter-Generation Club, the company will support 01 health scale, 2 blood pressure monitors, 3 height measuring straps; Coordinate with the Health Station to organize health check-ups twice a year...
These efforts aim to create conditions for Intergenerational Club members to help each other access and enjoy increasingly high-quality health services; members to proactively participate in activities to protect, care for and improve the health of themselves, their families and the community; and to strengthen the exchange and connection between clubs...
