Vitamin C in tangerines can help protect the immune system from viruses and bacteria

1. Rich in antioxidants

Antioxidants protect the body by neutralizing the harmful effects of oxidative stress - caused by the accumulation of free radicals. These free radicals are linked to the development of chronic diseases such as heart disease, arthritis and cancer.

Tangerines are a rich source of antioxidants such as vitamin C, beta-cryptoxanthin, naringin, hesperidin, tangeretin, and nobiletin. Vitamin C is beneficial for skin and heart health and has anti-cancer properties, according to Healthline .

2. Strengthen the immune system

Vitamin C in tangerines can help protect the immune system from viruses and bacteria. In addition, vitamin C also enhances phagocytes (a type of immune cell) and kills bacteria.

3. Supports brain health

Antioxidants in tangerines such as vitamin C and nobiletin may protect the body against brain-related diseases such as schizophrenia, Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease. Additionally, animal studies have shown that nobiletin from tangerine peel may help reduce the negative effects of Alzheimer's disease.

4. Improve skin

Collagen is a protein that provides structure and maintains the health and stability of the skin. As we age, the amount of collagen in the body decreases. However, vitamin C promotes collagen synthesis, aids in wound healing, and reduces signs of aging such as wrinkles.

5. Reduce the risk of heart disease

Antioxidants in tangerines such as vitamin C, tangeretin, and nobiletin may promote heart health. Studies show that vitamin C may reduce the risk of heart disease by lowering blood pressure, improving blood vessel function, and reducing blood triglycerides and harmful cholesterol levels.

Similarly, studies have also shown that tangeretin and nobiletin may help reduce total cholesterol and triglyceride levels, helping to reduce the risk of atherosclerosis.

6. Has anti-cancer properties

The antioxidants in tangerines can help fight cancer. Accordingly, vitamin C can prevent the growth and spread of tumors, promote wound healing after surgery. Vitamin C also helps improve the effectiveness of chemotherapy, while reducing the toxicity of this process.
