The above information was shared in an online television consultation program with the topic "Strategy for choosing early admission methods to increase the chance of admission" of Thanh Nien Newspaper on the afternoon of April 25.
Medical students have a 6-year university study period.
Sending a question to the program, reader Phuoc Long wrote: "I want to study medicine but when I go to the hospital, I feel pressured. If I were a doctor, I might not be able to complete my job. So what major should I choose to study that is related to medicine but has less direct pressure from treating patients?"
Dr. Nguyen Thanh Phuong, Head of Business Relations and Student Employment Department at Nguyen Tat Thanh University, said: "The medical profession is very noble but the pressure of studying is also very great."
According to Dr. Phuong, to become a skilled doctor, students not only spend 6 years studying in medical school, but also spend more than half of their time practicing in hospitals with specialists. After graduating, general practitioners still have to continue their studies, so the total time to become a treating physician can be up to 10 years, Dr. Phuong noted.
Dr. Phuong shared: "Not only during study time, when working, doctors also face great pressure. This can be seen when we stand in front of the emergency department of Cho Ray Hospital."
However, according to Dr. Phuong, the medical profession does not only include general practitioners but also other professions. The advice this expert gives is that candidates should reconsider their academic ability to choose a suitable major right from the entrance examination process.
For example, with the minimum score for the health sciences major in 2022, the medical major is 22 points (the minimum score of the Ministry of Education and Training). With a large number of candidates applying, the standard score for the medical major at schools is also higher, for example, Nguyen Tat Thanh University last year set the standard score at 24 (an average of 8 points per subject and good academic performance in grade 12). A major close to the medical major is pharmacy with a fairly high minimum score.
Dr. Phuong said that there are other options for candidates such as preventive medicine, the threshold for ensuring input quality (floor score) in 2022 seems to be "easier", with a score of 19 or higher. If the score is 19 or higher, candidates can consider nursing, a major that the whole world is in great need of.

"If you want to study nursing, the first important thing is that you must love patients and want to help them and be in good health to do this job," Dr. Phuong added.
In addition, according to Dr. Phuong, two majors that lean towards engineering but are related to medicine that candidates can consider are: biomedical engineering and medical physics. "Hospital management is also a major that helps you satisfy your passion for working in a hospital, but it is easier because it is less related to medical expertise," Dr. Phuong added.
Last year, the Ministry of Education and Training decided the threshold to ensure input quality (floor score) for health science majors based on the high school graduation exam scores as follows: medicine, dentistry is 22 points; traditional medicine, pharmacy is 21 points; midwifery, dental prosthetics, medical testing, medical imaging, nursing, preventive medicine, and rehabilitation is 19 points.
This is the minimum score to receive applications for these majors, applicable to candidates in region 3 with the minimum score (without coefficient) of all admission combinations including 3 exams/subjects. However, the standard scores for these majors at most schools are higher than the minimum score.
What are the benchmark scores for medical majors in 2022?
In 2022, Hanoi Medical University will take 28.15 points for the medical major, with the additional criterion of candidates registering for their first choice (meaning that for candidates who score 28.15 points, only candidates who register for their first choice will be admitted).
Ho Chi Minh City University of Medicine and Pharmacy has a standard score for the medical major based on the high school graduation exam score of 27.55. In the combined method of international English certificate selection, the standard score for the medical major is 26.6 points.
Pham Ngoc Thach University of Medicine also determined two different benchmark scores for candidates applying for medical school: 25.85 (candidates with registered residence in Ho Chi Minh City) and 26.65 (candidates with registered residence in other localities).
The Faculty of Medicine (Ho Chi Minh City National University) has a standard score of 26.45 for the medical major (high quality) (method of considering high school graduation exam scores) and 25.6 (method of combining English certificates).
In particular, the medical faculty of Nguyen Tat Thanh University has a standard score based on the high school graduation exam score of 25 points. Some schools have a standard score for the medical faculty equal to the floor score of the Ministry of Education and Training such as Hong Bang International University, Vo Truong Toan University, etc.
Currently, the training period for medical majors is 6 years, such as: medicine, preventive medicine, traditional medicine, dentistry. In addition, the training period for pharmacy major is 5 years and for other bachelor majors is 4 years.
