Be optimistic, but always prepare for the worst

When Li Ka-shing was 15 years old, his father died of tuberculosis, forcing him to drop out of school and go to work in a plastics factory. He worked up to 16 hours a day to earn enough money to support his family. In 1950, at the age of 22, he opened his own plastics manufacturing company, and gradually expanded his business into many areas, achieving great success.

Talking about the most difficult years of his life, when his father passed away due to illness and his family fell into poverty, he affirmed that he was always optimistic about the future.

"Even though I had to stop studying, I still believed that I would have the opportunity to study one way or another. At that time, my family had no other choice, I was forced to quickly go to work and for the first time face the reality of life. I had to be strong, had to find a way to build a future for myself," the billionaire once shared in an interview.

In his decades-long business career, billionaire Li Ka-shing has gone through many ups and downs, but he is confident that his group has never fallen into a financial crisis to the point of causing negative news.

"The reason we can do this is to always be prepared for the worst. That is my principle in life and work. Be optimistic, but always prepare for the worst that can happen," said Mr. Ly.

Billionaire Li Ka-shing affirms that his lifelong ambition is to improve himself. In his work, through each period, he always tries to learn, update and improve his work-related skills.

The first time he was promoted was a memorable moment for Mr. Ly: "My boss needed to write a handwritten letter to an important client. My colleagues suggested that I do it. My boss agreed right away and said that I wrote quickly and beautifully, and often understood what he wanted to say.

When I finished the important letter, my boss was very pleased. Soon after, I was promoted to head a small department. From then on, I understood that the knowledge and skills we accumulate can change our lives at an unexpected time."

When he was the owner of his own plastic manufacturing company, Mr. Ly required himself to grasp the market fluctuations, control product quality and worker productivity. Regardless of his position, field or job, he always emphasized careful observation and learning to improve his understanding and increase the necessary skills to serve his work well.

Winning hearts and minds is the secret to great success.

Having worked as a factory worker and then become one of Asia's richest billionaires, Mr. Ly clearly understands the difference between running a small business and a large corporation.

The secret to his great success is knowing how to "win people's hearts" and how to make employees feel attached and comfortable with him. According to him, that is the key to success in social relationships.

"As a manager, I have to recognize and utilize each person's individual abilities. However, the first thing to do is to make employees feel like they want to be with me, like me, and feel comfortable communicating with me," said Mr. Ly.

A simple lifestyle will bring great values.

Many people believe that owning personal items of billionaire Li Ka-shing will bring them luck. Therefore, many people try to own items donated by the billionaire for charity auctions. However, billionaire Li Ka-shing asserts that luck is not an important factor in his success.

"I am not a lucky person. I am a person who works hard to achieve my goals. I do not deny that the times create heroes, and that every successful career has an element of luck. However, when I start any job, I hardly rely on luck, only on my hard work and my ability to think for profit," said Mr. Ly.

Mr. Lee also emphasizes simplicity in lifestyle. He not only dresses simply but also pursues a simple lifestyle. He believes that saving money is very important in everyone's life, so that money can be saved for important things. Throughout his life, Mr. Lee said that he has never been in debt.

In addition, because he himself lived in poverty, Mr. Ly has always been interested in charity activities, especially charity in the field of education. It is estimated that he has spent 1.5 billion USD on charity activities.

Mr. Ly affirmed that he will continue to carry out charitable activities. He said that he chose a simple and frugal lifestyle so that he could do many great things, making his life more meaningful.
