Ho Chi Minh City Tam Anh General Hospital receives and treats about 50-100 patients with hoarseness, loss of voice due to talking too much, and vocal cord polyps every month.

On March 29, Master, Doctor CKII Tran Thi Thuy Hang, Head of the Department of ENT Center, Tam Anh General Hospital, Ho Chi Minh City, gave the above information, adding that most of the people coming for examination work in professions such as teaching, broadcasting, tour guide, livestreaming online sales...

People who talk a lot, talk loudly, for many years can easily lead to edema, degeneration of the mucosa of the vocal cords, forming vocal cord polyps (benign tumors on the vocal cords). Patients may also have accompanying factors such as smoking, drinking a lot of alcohol, sinusitis, gastroesophageal reflux...

Polyps prevent the vocal cords from closing, causing them to vibrate unevenly, leading to hoarseness and loss of breath the more you speak. Patients often feel tired and out of breath when speaking and cannot speak for long, feeling as if there is a hair or foreign object blocking their throat.

Like Ms. Nguyen, 29 years old, for a year now she has been suffering from hoarseness, shortness of breath when speaking, fatigue, shortness of breath, and sometimes completely losing her voice. The condition has been happening continuously, she bought medicine to take but it did not help, so she went to Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for examination.

The results of laryngoscopy using Xion endoscope and German DIVAS voice analysis software showed that there was a vocal cord polyp causing severe voice disorder.

Doctor Hang explained that the large left vocal cord polyp affects the ability to close the vocal cords when speaking, causing voice disorders, possibly due to frequent speaking for a long time.

Ms. Nguyen said she has been livestreaming to sell clothes for many years, twice a day, each session lasting about 3-4 hours continuously, and longer on weekends. She was treated with conservative internal medicine and adjusted her speaking habits, but her condition did not improve. She had surgery to remove vocal cord polyps after three months of medical treatment.

Dr. Hang performed endoscopic microsurgery of the larynx to minimize damage to the vocal cords, completely removing the polyps, and preserving the healthy mucosa of the vocal cords. After three weeks, her hoarseness was gone and she was able to speak almost normally again. Her voice improved by about 80-90% compared to before surgery.

Ms. Thao, who works in online business, also went to Tam Anh General Hospital in Ho Chi Minh City for a sore throat, hoarseness, and shortness of breath for more than a month, and taking medicine did not help. The patient was diagnosed with vocal cord polyps but when detected early, the polyp only needed medical treatment and follow-up examinations.

Polyps do not disappear on their own. Patients need to be accurately diagnosed and treated promptly. Vocal cord polyp removal surgery helps reduce hoarseness and shortness of breath. Without surgery, the voice may become more hoarse, with the risk of complete voice loss, affecting work and spirit.

After surgery, patients need to take medication as directed by the doctor, can eat and drink normally but need to limit talking for about a week.

People with hoarseness lasting more than two weeks should see a doctor. In addition, avoid talking too much, loudly, continuously; drink enough two liters of water per day; do not abuse stimulants; limit spicy, hot foods; clean the throat with salt water solution.
