Charlie Naysmith, 8 years old, New Zealand, was walking with his family on the beach when he came across a rock. The rock was quite large, it was yellow and white. It seemed to have just drifted from the sea to the shore.
Charlie was a very curious boy, so when he saw the rock, he decided to take it home to play. He was very excited to show his parents about this “trophy”. Alex Naysmith, Charlie’s father, suddenly discovered that this rock had many unusual features. Alex thought that it could emit a faint scent. Therefore, they contacted the local authorities to report this.

After careful examination, scientists confirmed that the rock Charlie found was a rare piece of ambergris. Ambergris is a substance formed from the digestive system of sperm whales.
Ambergris is likened to the agarwood of the sea, containing odorless alcohol, which helps the scent last longer. This is a very rare ingredient in the perfume industry, coveted by perfume connoisseurs.
Not all sperm whales produce ambergris. According to scientists, only about 1% of the 350,000 sperm whales on Earth can produce ambergris.

It is estimated that 1 kg of ambergris will be sold for 12,600 pounds (more than 370 million VND). Thus, the 3kg block of ambergris that Charlie found could be sold for up to 40,000 pounds (more than 1.2 billion VND).
Experts say it is impossible to find chunks of ambergris in this area.
