(CLO) Japan, the Philippines and the United States have agreed to strengthen trilateral cooperation to deal with rising tensions in regional waters, according to an announcement from the Office of Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday morning.

The three countries pledged to “further strengthen and deepen cooperation in the economic, maritime and technological fields,” President Marcos Jr.’s office said after a virtual meeting with U.S. President Joe Biden and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. The meeting took place Monday morning Asia time.

"I am confident that our three countries will continue to work closely to maintain the achievements made in strengthening and deepening the relationship," Mr. Marcos said at the meeting.

This online meeting is a follow-up to the first trilateral summit between President Marcos, President Biden and former Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida held in Washington last April.

During the meeting, President Biden praised President Marcos for his tact and diplomacy in the South China Sea. He also expressed optimism that his successor would recognize the importance of maintaining this partnership. President-elect Donald Trump will officially take office next Monday.

Both Japan and the Philippines are locked in separate territorial disputes with China at sea. Japan faces a dispute in the East China Sea, while the Philippines has ongoing tensions with China in the South China Sea.

Over the past two years, tensions between China and the Philippines have escalated as coast guards from both countries have clashed repeatedly in disputed areas. These incidents not only threaten regional security but also complicate the geopolitical situation in the South China Sea.

In this context, the strengthening of cooperation between Japan, the Philippines and the United States is considered an important step to protect regional security and stability. Areas of cooperation include economics, maritime, and technology in defense and cybersecurity.

According to international analysts, trilateral cooperation is not only aimed at dealing with challenges from China but also strengthening the presence of the US and Japan in the Southeast Asian region.

Experts say the trilateral cooperation between Japan, the Philippines and the United States will continue to grow, especially in the context of increasingly complex regional security challenges. Close coordination between the three countries will not only bring security benefits but also open up opportunities for broader economic and technological cooperation.
