Can Tho Mr. Cung Hoang Phuong, 60 years old, travels 30 km to school every day with the determination to get a Pharmacy degree to serve the job of preparing traditional medicine.
At the graduation ceremony of Tay Do University on September 30, Mr. Phuong was the oldest student to receive a Pharmacy degree.
Due to his poor health, he was helped up to the podium by his family to receive his diploma. He said he was moved because he had fulfilled his dream of decades, and his studies had always been fully supported by his wife and children. Below the stage, many students cheered and clapped in congratulations.
The video of this moment was then shared on social networks, attracting thousands of interactions, most of whom admired his learning spirit.
Dr. Tran Cong Luan, Principal and Head of the Faculty of Pharmacy and Nursing, expressed his respect and appreciation for the efforts and learning results of the 60-year-old new pharmacist.
"The process of striving over the past time shows that with his love of learning and high determination, Mr. Phuong has overcome the conditions of age, long distance, inferiority complex... to achieve his wish, which is very valuable," said Mr. Luan.

Talking about his education, Mr. Phuong said that he graduated from Can Tho Medical High School and worked at Truong Thanh Commune Health Station from 1986 to 1989. After that, he quit his job and opened a pharmacy at home with his wife to take care of his two daughters' education.
In 2014, he decided to return to school, both to satisfy his passion for learning and to help with his pharmaceutical work. Every day, this man rides his motorbike 30 km to school to study with more than 50 other students in class 9K, most of whom are between the ages of 18 and 20.
After more than 4 years of study, in 2019, Mr. Phuong completed the program with 172 credits, with some English credits left to meet output standards.
"However, due to a sudden illness, I had to go for treatment for a while, then return to school and pass this subject, so I only received my diploma on September 30," Mr. Phuong said. Before the ceremony, Mr. Phuong had an eye disease, poor vision, making it difficult for him to move around, and had to have surgery at the hospital.
Master Nguyen Ngoc Yen, lecturer of the Faculty of Pharmacy - Nursing, academic advisor of class 9K, said that at first, realizing that Mr. Phuong was old, his studies had been interrupted for a long time, and his house was far away, she assigned some young people to care and support him. However, with great effort and hard work, the oldest student in this class has approached and absorbed the study program quite well, on par with the other members.
"In particular, Mr. Phuong almost never misses a class, except when he is sick," Ms. Yen said. According to the female lecturer, when practicing in the laboratory, Mr. Phuong always has initiatives, applies and promotes the knowledge he has learned well. Ms. Yen highly appreciates Mr. Phuong's application of the essential oil extraction process to research and develop cough treatment products and some cosmetics.
