Dr. Nguyen Trong Hung, Head of the Department of Examination and Nutritional Counseling for Adults - National Institute of Nutrition, said that gout is a type of arthritis, which often starts suddenly, causing swelling, pain and inflammation of the joints. Nearly half of gout cases usually start in the big toe, followed by the fingers, wrists, knees and heels.

Symptoms of the disease occur when there is too much uric acid in the blood. When uric acid levels are high, uric crystals can build up in the joints. This process causes swelling, inflammation, and severe pain.

Gout attacks usually occur at night, after meals rich in protein and last 3-10 days. This condition is caused by 3 common reasons: Due to increased production of endogenous uric acid; Due to decreased excretion of uric acid in the kidneys; Eating too many foods high in purines such as red meat and seafood.

Eating haphazardly can cause the disease to progress in a bad direction and leave unpredictable consequences. Therefore, in addition to following the treatment regimen, exercise also requires a reasonable menu for better treatment results.

Every day, the body produces uric acid after metabolizing purines, which are found in many foods. To control gout, you need to control the cause, including reducing your purine intake. No diet will completely prevent acute gout attacks, but a healthy diet will help you manage your health better: maintain an ideal weight; establish and follow healthy eating habits; limit foods with purines; add foods that can help control uric acid levels.

According to Dr. Nguyen Trong Hung, foods and drinks high in purines will increase the risk of acute gout attacks, so you should stay away from these foods: red meat, lamb and pork; offal such as liver, kidney, brain, intestines...; Seafood, especially shellfish such as shrimp, mussels, anchovies and sardines;

Avoid fast-growing green vegetables such as asparagus, bamboo shoots, mushrooms, bean sprouts, taro stem… because they increase the rate of uric acid synthesis in the blood; Products with high fructose content such as soda and some fruit juices, ice cream, candy and fast food.

Avoid drinking alcohol because alcohol increases uric acid production in the liver and prevents the kidneys from excreting uric acid. Avoid using diuretics and corticosteroids.

Avoid eating cakes and biscuits as they are low in nutrients and can increase uric acid levels.

People with gout should choose foods with low purine content such as: low-fat and non-fat milk and dairy products, such as yogurt and skim milk; Fresh fruits and vegetables, should use fruits rich in vitamin C such as strawberries, pineapple... because they effectively reduce inflammation, helping patients to be healthier; Nuts, peanut butter and cereals; Fats, potatoes, rice, bread and pasta; Eggs (in moderation); Meats such as fish, chicken and red meat are good in moderate amounts (about 100 - 120g per day, depending on the patient's condition);

Green vegetables: broccoli and spinach are fiber-rich foods recommended for gout patients because they can reduce protein absorption, thereby reducing the formation of uric acid. You should use more alkaline foods such as kale, radish, squash, etc. because they have the effect of neutralizing uric acid in the blood, slowing the progression of the disease.

You should drink plenty of water every day, 2 - 2.5 liters per day depending on your weight, gender, age... Supplementing vitamin C about 500-1000mg per day can also help reduce uric acid.

Although a healthy diet can help control uric acid levels, patients still need to adhere to taking medication to prevent acute gout attacks. Regular check-ups with your doctor can help you find the best treatment for each patient.
