Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said on January 31 that the BRICS group is not seeking to create a common currency to replace the USD but only wants to create a common investment platform.
According to Reuters, the statement was made a day after US President Donald Trump warned that he would impose a 100% tax on goods from BRICS countries if they created a new currency or supported another currency to replace the US dollar.

According to Mr. Peskov, this is not the first time President Trump has made such a statement. "We should remember the words of our President (Vladimir Putin), which are more important and meaningful for us. The problem is that BRICS is not discussing the creation of a common currency and has never done so. BRICS is talking about creating new joint investment platforms to allow joint investments in third countries. Perhaps American experts should explain the BRICS agenda to Mr. Trump more clearly," Mr. Peskov said.
The Indian Ministry of External Affairs also affirmed on the same day that BRICS has no plans to replace the USD.
BRICS initially included India, Brazil, Russia and China but later added many other countries.
Russia condemns US plan to build "Iron Dome"
On the same day, January 31, the Russian Foreign Ministry condemned President Trump's signing of an executive order to build a new missile shield for the US. The leader signed a decree to develop the US Iron Dome system (similar to Israel's air defense missile system) to prevent ballistic, hypersonic, cruise missiles and other airborne threats.
The White House says the US wants to modernize old systems and deal with threats that have become more complex as US adversaries develop new weapons systems.
At a press conference on January 31, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova said that the US plan is aimed at undermining the nuclear deterrence capabilities of Russia and China, according to Reuters.
"We consider this plan as confirmation of the US focus on turning space into an arena of armed confrontation and deploying weapons there. The US approach will not contribute to reducing tensions or improving the situation in the strategic environment, including creating a basis for effective dialogue on strategic offensive weapons," Zakharova said.
