A place to preserve cultural beauty

Although it has just been opened and put into operation, Phin Ho Night Market is bustling with buyers and sellers. Engrossed in every sound and every movement of the panpipe dancer Sung Chu Dinh, May Hoc village (Phin Ho commune), we feel the unique cultural space of the Mong people. Artist Sung Chu Dinh excitedly shared: “When I was young, every time I followed my father to the market, went to the Gau Tao festival, the sound of the panpipe was deeply engraved in my mind. Through the sound of the panpipe, the panpipe dance that our ancestors passed down to their children contains thoughts, feelings, and is an immense pride. The sound of the panpipe goes over mountains, over passes to call friends, becoming a unique cultural feature of the Mong people for thousands of years”.

Coming to Phin Ho Night Market, the highlanders not only bring goods but also bring their own beauty and uniqueness to add color to the market. This can be clearly seen through the traditional costumes that the boys and girls wear when going to the market. When the time comes, everyone chooses their most beautiful dress to go to the market. Vu Thi Sinh, Huoi Dap village, Na Khoa commune happily shared: “The Mong ethnic costume that I am wearing was made for me by my mother. I am very proud to wear the traditional costume to perform for the audience at Phin Ho Night Market. Through this, I also understand more, appreciate, preserve and promote the traditional beauty of the nation…”.

With the sound of mountains and forests and traditional cultural values, besides modern stalls, Phin Ho Night Market also sells many items such as: Hand-embroidered shoes, corn wine, self-forged farming tools (knives, hoes, shovels...). Mr. Phan Ngoc Linh, Head of the Department of Culture and Information of Nam Po district said: "Phin Ho Night Market is a vivid picture, reflecting the economic development in the Nam Po countryside which is increasingly changing. Highlanders come to the night market not only to exchange and trade goods but also to contribute to preserving the traditional cultural features and origins of each ethnic group."

Agricultural products are sold by people at Phin Ho night market.

Bringing goods and tourism far and wide

Phin Ho Commune is conveniently located along National Highway 4H, the main route connecting Dien Bien Phu City and Muong Nhe District (an attractive destination for tourists at Milestone 0 - A Pa Chai, Sin Thau Commune). Therefore, in addition to preserving traditional cultural beauty, Nam Po District has determined that the organization of Phin Ho Night Market is a trade promotion activity, enhancing the promotion and introduction of the district's goods and services, especially agricultural and forestry products... to consumers inside and outside the province. At the same time, promoting joint ventures and partnerships to expand the market, creating a driving force to connect with the community tourism destination of Na Su village (Cha Nua Commune).

At Phin Ho Night Market, there are areas to introduce agricultural products, traditional food areas, entertainment areas... Each person comes to the market with specialties from the mountains, villages, and families, all of which are clean products such as: wild vegetables, homegrown vegetables, free-range chickens and ducks, rice, corn, potatoes, cassava, and agricultural tools. These products are the crystallization of the hard work and creativity of people in these difficult lands. The goods are simple and the way they are displayed is also rustic, not fussy. Ms. Ho Chinh Hoi, De Tinh 2 village (Phin Ho commune) shared: "With a night market, people are very happy! They no longer have to struggle to carry goods and agricultural products far away to sell! We sell whatever we have, chickens, ducks, bunches of wild vegetables, food... mainly homegrown products made by our family".

“This is the first time I have come to Phin Ho and experienced the night market space in the highlands, it is really impressive. In particular, there are many things that attract me, from the art performances, traditional costumes, especially the friendliness and hospitality of the highland people. I especially like the traditional dishes, the fragrant flavors of the thang co pots, the specialties made by the people themselves. I bought dried bamboo shoots and honey for myself and as gifts for my relatives...” - Ms. Nguyen Thi Phuong, Dien Bien Phu City shared.

Phin Ho night market is held every Saturday evening, starting from 5pm to 10pm. The market has the participation of 15 communes and enterprises, cooperatives, and business households inside and outside the district. The market provides goods and services to serve the needs of tourists and people such as: goods, food, entertainment, etc. Mr. Leng Van Minh, Chairman of Phin Ho Commune People's Committee emphasized: "Phin Ho night market is a typical product of the district. After nearly 2 months of operation, the number of visitors to the market has increased every week and this has proven the attractiveness and appeal of the night market to tourists".

The successful organization of Phin Ho Night Market has contributed to promoting trade, promoting economic development and people's lives, promoting the image, land, people as well as agricultural and forestry products of the people in the commune in particular, and neighboring communes in Nam Po district in general. Through the night market, it has brought a "new wind" to develop the commune's tourism potential, especially experiential and discovery tourism; raising awareness, responsibility and tourism practices of the people. Thereby, contributing to preserving and developing traditional culture, making the night market an attractive destination for tourists who want to learn about the culture, life and traditional customs of ethnic minorities in the area.
