Da Nang According to the Chairman of the ASEAN Intellectual Property Working Group, the digital economy brings unprecedented opportunities and challenges, so it is necessary to exploit the power of intellectual property.
The information was delivered by Mr. Xaysomphet Norasingh, Chairman of AWGIPC, at the opening ceremony of the 72nd meeting of the ASEAN Working Group on Intellectual Property Cooperation (AWGIPC 72), hosted by the National Office of Intellectual Property of Vietnam on April 22.
The AWGIPC Chairman said that the digital economy presents both unprecedented opportunities and challenges. “It is important that we harness the power of intellectual property to navigate this new frontier effectively,” he said. The global landscape is evolving rapidly, so it is necessary to remain flexible and adaptive in our approach to enhancing and expanding the impact of intellectual property at all levels in the region.

According to the AWGIPC Chairman, by creating an enabling environment for innovation and entrepreneurship, the full potential of ASEAN's creative industries can be unlocked, thereby promoting inclusive growth and prosperity for all.
AWGIPC has implemented the ASEAN Action Plan on Intellectual Property for the period 2016-2025, and to date has achieved 81% success in the initiatives and activities under the program.
The objective of ASEAN cooperation on intellectual property is to ensure adequate and effective protection of intellectual property rights in the region, thereby promoting innovation, technology transfer and dissemination, and enhancing regional and global trade liberalization.

Mr. Luu Hoang Long, Director of the Department of Intellectual Property, Ministry of Science and Technology, said that in recent years, ASEAN has promoted intellectual property cooperation among member countries, expanded cooperative relations with partners to turn ASEAN into a creative and competitive region in the world.
In the integration process, AWGIPC has been playing a leading role in developing, coordinating and implementing ASEAN Action Programs on intellectual property to achieve the goals stated in the ASEAN Economic Community Blueprint.
Director Luu Hoang Long also welcomed East Timor to participate in the AWGIPC Meeting for the first time as an observer.

Vice Chairman of the Da Nang People's Committee Tran Chi Cuong said intellectual property plays an increasingly important role in socio-economic development and is a core factor to promote innovation, ensure the investment environment, maintain competitive advantages, improve productivity and product quality of organizations and businesses, and protect consumer rights.
In the three years from 2022 to present, Da Nang city has supported nearly 100 businesses to innovate and improve technology, develop products and support many organizations, individuals and businesses to register and establish intellectual property rights; support registration for protection, management and development of industrial property rights for 37 community trademarks in the form of collective trademarks and certification trademarks.
As of December 31, 2023, Da Nang has 4,202 granted certificates, including 3,991 trademarks, 71 patents and utility solutions, 140 industrial designs, ranking 6th in the country. The city's leaders hope to have many events connecting, sharing information, and supporting Da Nang to better implement intellectual property activities, contributing to promoting socio-economic development.
AWGIPC was established on the basis of the Framework Agreement on Intellectual Property Cooperation among ASEAN countries, adopted at the 5th Summit in Bangkok, Thailand in 1995. AWGIPC has the function of developing, implementing and evaluating ASEAN's intellectual property cooperation activities.
AWGIPC's programs and plans aim to achieve the goals of perfecting the legal framework; training human resources; exchanging information on professional issues; strengthening relationships and facilitating businesses in registering and enforcing rights; participating in international treaties on intellectual property related to international registration procedures...
The 72nd AWGIPC meeting focused on the ASEAN Action Plan on Intellectual Property for the period 2016-2025 and intellectual property cooperation activities between ASEAN and ASEAN partners (AANZFTA, WIPO, European Patent Office, European Intellectual Property Office, French Industrial Property Institute, Japan Patent Office...).
