Admissions to grades 1, 6, and 10 in major cities are always of interest to many parents. To prepare for the admission plan for the first grade classes in the 2025-2026 school year, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training is seeking feedback from the Departments of Education and Training.
GRADE 6 ADMISSION: MAIN FORMS OF ADMISSION
In Ho Chi Minh City, the annual enrollment of 6th grade students into secondary schools is built by localities according to 3 forms of enrollment: enrollment by GIS map; enrollment by specific criteria; and enrollment by results of capacity assessment tests.
In particular, the selection of routes according to GIS maps ensures that all students who complete primary school have a place to study at secondary school in their locality and can study at a school near their home. This is the most popular form of admission being implemented by districts. The other two methods are implemented in some secondary schools where the demand is many times higher than the enrollment quota.
Each district has a number of junior high schools that conduct 6th grade admissions based on their own criteria, including the total score of the final semester test of 5th grade in Vietnamese and math, or additional requirements for foreign language and computer certificates.
For example, in District 1, Huynh Khuong Ninh Secondary School follows the model of an advanced, integrated school. In the 2024-2025 school year, the school will maintain the admission method based on the final exam score of 20 points in Vietnamese and math at the end of semester 2, along with a Flyers foreign language certificate of at least 12/15 shields. In addition, other secondary criteria in the priority admission include international IT certificates, other awards in sports, international math awards, etc.
Mr. Cao Duc Khoa, Principal of Huynh Khuong Ninh Secondary School, informed that the school's enrollment target for grade 6 is about 250 students each year. However, the number of students applying to the school is often nearly 3 times higher. In recent years, the number of students with international language certificates applying to the school has increased, increasing competition. Therefore, in the past 2 years, IT certificates along with other certificates and awards such as sports awards and international math awards have become secondary criteria for the school to prioritize in admission.
Similarly, Nguyen Van To Secondary School (District 10) conducts 6th grade admissions by considering its own criteria. Mr. Nguyen Vi Tuong Thuy, Principal of the school, said that each year the school enrolls about 150 6th graders, but the actual demand of parents who want their children to study at the school exceeds this many times. Therefore, every year, in addition to the foreign language certificate which is a mandatory condition for admission, the school uses other priority admission criteria, including: IT certificates, students with outstanding abilities in English, sports, arts, team work or being awarded in competitions organized or jointly organized by the Ministry of Education and Training, the Department of Education and Training, etc.
Some other "hot" secondary schools have also been recruiting 6th graders for many years based on academic results and international certificates such as: Le Van Tam Secondary School (Binh Thanh District), Nguyen Du Secondary School, Tran Van On (District 1), Van Don (District 4), Hong Bang (District 5)...
6 SECONDARY SCHOOLS PROPOSE ADMISSION BY SURVEY
From the 2024-2025 school year, Ho Chi Minh City will have 6 junior high schools enrolling students in grade 6 by combining admission with a competency assessment test, including: Tran Dai Nghia Junior High School - High School (District 1); Tran Quoc Toan 1 Junior High School, Binh Tho, Hoa Lu (Thu Duc City); Nguyen Huu Tho Junior High School (District 7); Nguyen An Khuong Junior High School (Hoc Mon District). The entrance exam for grade 6 at Tran Dai Nghia Junior High School - High School is conducted by the Department of Education and Training, while the remaining 5 schools are organized by the local Department of Education and Training.
Regarding the method of enrolling 6th graders, Mr. Nguyen Thai Vinh Nguyen, Head of the Department of Education and Training of Thu Duc City, informed that Thu Duc City proposed to keep it stable as last year. In particular, there will be 3 secondary schools that will enroll 6th graders using a competency assessment test. The admission requirements are that all students who have completed primary school and wish to enroll in 6th grade in Thu Duc City, have an average score of 9 or higher in math and Vietnamese at the end of the year. Students who take the test at any school will contact and submit their application to that school and can only register and submit their application at one secondary school.
Each student can only register for the entrance exam at one school (without any other wishes), the exam results of that school will not be used for admission to the other two schools. The exam is expected to be organized by the Department of Education and Training of Thu Duc City in mid-June 2025 with a duration of 90 minutes.
"If we consider admission based on math scores, Vietnamese scores, English certificates or other skills, it will be very difficult to ensure. If we consider results from foreign language and IT certificates, the pressure will be on students to participate in exams... Therefore, organizing a survey will help the school select truly excellent and suitable students," said Mr. Nguyen.
N MANY NEW POINTS IN GRADE 10 ENROLLMENT
In addition, the Ho Chi Minh City Department of Education and Training also requested high schools to report expected enrollment targets for grade 10, bilingual classes, integrated English classes, and specialized classes of specialized high schools.
According to the roadmap, from the 2025-2026 school year, Ho Chi Minh City will stop organizing specialized classes in 4 high schools: Gia Dinh (Binh Thanh District), Mac Dinh Chi (District 6), Nguyen Thuong Hien (Tan Binh District), Nguyen Huu Huan (Thu Duc City). Specialized classes will only be held at 2 specialized high schools: Le Hong Phong and Tran Dai Nghia.
In recent years, on average, each year the four high schools listed above have recruited a total of 22 specialized 10th grade classes. When they no longer recruit specialized 10th grade classes, the schools will increase the quota for regular 10th grade classes, so according to the principals of the middle schools, students will have more opportunities to enter the four top schools in the city.
Mr. Lam Trieu Nghi, Principal of Nguyen Thuong Hien High School, shared that every year the school's quota for specialized 10th grade classes is 5 classes, each class has 35 students, so a total of 175 students. This year, when there are no more specialized classes, the school has the ability to recruit 225 more students for 5 regular 10th grade classes, each class has 45 students.
Similarly, Mr. Do Duong Cung, Principal of Nguyen Huu Huan High School, said that opportunities for students in Thu Duc City will increase. With no 5 specialized 10th grade classes from the 2025-2026 school year, the school will propose to increase the quota for regular 10th grade classes to 225 students.
Mr. To Lam Vien Khoa, Vice Principal of Gia Dinh High School, said that every year this school usually recruits 210 students for 6 specialized classes, so in the near future there is a possibility of increasing the maximum quota to 6 regular classes, each class has 45 students...
In addition, speaking with Thanh Nien reporters, the leader of a specialized high school said that it plans to propose increasing the 10th grade quota in 2025 by about 105 students for 3 specialized classes of math, chemistry and English under Project 5695.
Expected to announce the enrollment plan for the first level in March
Mr. Nguyen Van Hieu, Director of the Department of Education and Training of Ho Chi Minh City, emphasized the need to collect feedback from localities to develop a comprehensive process and solution for online enrollment, including technical solutions and implementation procedures. Localities will summarize and evaluate the results and experiences of implementing enrollment for the 2024-2025 school year at local units. On that basis, synthesize and propose contents and recommendations that need to be added to the city's primary enrollment plan for the 2025-2026 school year to improve the effectiveness of enrollment.
According to regulations, after the Departments of Education and Training provide comments, the Department of Education and Training will synthesize and develop a plan for enrollment at the beginning of the 2025-2026 school year and submit it to the Ho Chi Minh City People's Committee for approval. It is expected that in March, Ho Chi Minh City will announce the enrollment plan for grades 1, 6, and 10; at the end of April, the enrollment quota for grade 10 will be announced so that grade 9 students can register their wishes for grade 10 in early May.
