This year, Hanoi National University of Education opens 5 new majors, including: Biotechnology, Physics (Semiconductor Physics and Engineering), History, Sociology, Vietnamese Language and Vietnamese Culture.

In particular, for the Physics major (Semiconductor Physics and Engineering), the school plans to enroll 120 students for 3 methods: direct admission of candidates with outstanding abilities and achievements (24 students), admission based on ability assessment test scores (36 students), admission based on 2025 high school graduation exam scores (60 students).

Three schools under the Vietnam National University, Hanoi, including the University of Technology, the University of Natural Sciences, and the Vietnam-Japan University, also opened their first bachelor's/engineering program in semiconductors.

Hanoi University of Science and Technology does not have a semiconductor major but has related majors such as Microelectronics Engineering and Nanotechnology.

Semiconductor enrollment targets of schools in 2025 are specifically as follows.

Why is the semiconductor industry hot?

According to calculations by the Ministry of Information and Communications, the domestic semiconductor industry needs 10,000 engineers each year, but current human resources meet less than 20%.

The Government's project "Developing human resources for the semiconductor industry to 2030, with a vision to 2050" aims that by 2030, Vietnam will train at least 50,000 bachelors/engineers to serve the semiconductor industry in all stages of the semiconductor industry value chain such as: design, packaging, testing and manufacturing of microchips and semiconductors.

Of these, about 15,000 are microchip design engineers, 35,000 engineers work in chip manufacturing, packaging and testing factories, and 5,000 have deep expertise in artificial intelligence (AI) serving the semiconductor industry. In addition, in-depth training on the semiconductor industry is provided to 1,300 Vietnamese lecturers teaching at research institutes, universities, training support facilities and businesses.

Associate Professor, Dr. Le Huu Lap, former Deputy Director of the Academy of Posts and Telecommunications

Speaking with Tien Phong reporter, Associate Professor, Dr. Le Huu Lap, former Deputy Director of the Academy of Posts and Telecommunications, shared that the reason the semiconductor industry has been hot in the past few years is because the demand for human resources for the implementation of Resolution 57/NQTW on breakthroughs in science and technology development, innovation and national digital transformation is very large.

According to Associate Professor Lap, in response to this task, universities are expanding their scale and opening new related majors, especially science and technology majors. Of course, these majors also attract a large number of interested candidates and applicants.

The Academy of Posts and Telecommunications Technology is one of the five national key schools in engineering and technology that the Government has invested in for its research and development potential, innovation to serve the fields of high technology, strategic technology and national digital transformation, along with extensive experience in training in digital technology fields such as: Information technology, Artificial intelligence, Data engineering, Semiconductor microchips, Multimedia technology, Control and automation engineering, Telecommunications electronics engineering, IoT - Internet of things... will be the address for students to choose.

Mr. Lap also believes that, along with the engineering and technology sectors as presented above, the Semiconductor Microchip industry in the future will need a fairly high number of human resources, forecasting that in the next 5 years it will need about 20,000 people and in the next 10 years about 50,000 people with university degrees or higher.

“Meanwhile, we currently have just over 5,000 chip design engineers. This is also a difficult field of study, a hybrid of information technology and electronic engineering,” Mr. Lap said.
