(CLO) The administration of President Donald Trump has proceeded to deport alleged members of a Venezuelan gang from the US, despite a court ban.
The deportation campaign comes after Judge James Boasberg ruled against President Trump’s use of the Foreign Enemies Act, a wartime law, to quickly deport more than 200 people accused of being members of the Tren de Aragua, a Venezuelan gang linked to kidnappings, extortion and contract killings.

The White House said the judge had no authority to block the move. "A single judge in one city cannot order the rerouting of a plane full of foreign terrorists who have been deported from American soil," White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt said.
Ms Leavitt asserted that the court had “no legal basis” to intervene and stressed that federal courts generally have no jurisdiction over how a president conducts foreign affairs.
Patrick Eddington, a homeland security and civil rights expert at the Cato Institute, said the White House was "openly defying" the judge. "This is an unprecedented and far-reaching act," Eddington said, calling it the strongest test yet of America's system of checks and balances.
In a court filing on Sunday, the Trump administration said “some” Venezuelans had been deported before the judge’s order took effect, but did not provide further details.
Senior Trump administration officials told Axios they hoped to complete the deportation operation before a judge could intervene. One official said the court order was invalid because the plane was “over international waters.”
The American Civil Liberties Union (ACLU), which sued the Trump administration over its use of the law, has asked the administration to ensure that no one is deported in violation of a court order. "If someone has been turned over to a foreign government after the order was issued, we expect the U.S. government to cooperate with that country to return them," said ACLU attorney Lee Gelernt.
