The Supreme Court of Maine (USA) has ruled to disqualify former US President Donald Trump from the primary election in this state due to his role in the riot at the Capitol building in January 2021.
Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows said Trump, a potential Republican candidate in the 2024 presidential election, incited a riot by spreading false information about the 2020 presidential election, then urging supporters to protest at Capitol Hill, preventing lawmakers from certifying the election results.
With the above court ruling, Maine becomes the second state in the US to ban former President Trump from participating in the primary election to choose the Republican Party's nomination in next year's presidential election. Previously, on December 19, the Colorado Court of Appeals also ruled that former President Trump would not be able to participate in the primary vote to choose the Republican presidential candidate in this state.
By law, Mr. Trump will have until January 4, 2024 to appeal the Colorado court's ruling.
