Every day during the Lunar New Year, thousands of tourists flock to Dray Sap waterfall (Dak Nong) to enjoy the majestic natural beauty. The sound of the waterfall echoes, the white water like a soft silk strip, blending with the wild scenery, creating a magnificent natural picture.

The legend of "smoke waterfall" in the Central Highlands mountains and forests

Dray Sap Waterfall is located in Dak Sor Commune, Krong No District, Dak Nong Province, and is located on the Serepok River, falling from a height of more than 20m, stretching about 100m. In the Ede language, "Dray Sap" means "smoke waterfall", because the water falling from above creates a misty mist, like smoke floating in the air.

For many tourists, Dray Sap waterfall has become an indispensable destination during every Tet holiday. Mr. Y Khanh (in Dak Mam town, Krong No district) shared: "For more than 10 years, every year I bring my family here to enjoy the fresh air. The waterfall is powerful but also poetic, showing the typical beauty of the Central Highlands."

Not only locals, many tourists from other provinces also traveled hundreds of kilometers to admire this natural wonder. Mr. Y Tin Byă (in Cu Hue commune, Ea Kar district, Dak Lak province) came here for the first time and could not hide his excitement: "I had heard about Dray Sap waterfall, but when I saw it with my own eyes, I was really overwhelmed by its majestic beauty. This year, I brought my whole family of 7 here to play and everyone enjoyed it."

Similarly, Mr. Nguyen Nhat Long (a tourist from Hue City) shared: "Dray Sap Waterfall is really beautiful! The rushing streams of water creating white foam in the middle of the wild mountains and forests create a scene that is both majestic and poetic."

As the investor in exploiting the Dray Sap - Gia Long waterfall cluster, Lien Thanh Dak Nong Construction Investment Joint Stock Company has been making efforts to build a sustainable tourism model. Mr. Nguyen Huu Phuoc, Director of the company, shared:

"We always focus on nature conservation and environmental protection. Currently, the unit has planted more than 12 hectares of forest to regenerate the ecosystem, contributing to preserving the green landscape and creating a clean environment for tourists. In the coming time, we will continue to expand entertainment and recreation areas combined with eco-tourism, bringing more attractive and closer-to-nature experiences."

Thanks to those efforts, during the recent Lunar New Year, the tourist area welcomed more than 1,000 visitors per day, affirming the special attraction of Dray Sap waterfall.

Although Dak Nong tourism is developing strongly, it still faces many challenges. According to Mr. Nguyen Huu Phuoc, economic difficulties in recent years have caused a significant decrease in the number of visitors. In addition, the lack of synchronous transport infrastructure is also a major barrier, making it difficult to attract international visitors and visitors from distant provinces.

More worryingly, the waste situation is becoming a pressing issue in landscape protection.

"The waterfall area is very large, while the awareness of environmental hygiene of a part of tourists is still not high. Littering not only affects the natural beauty of the waterfall but also increases the cost of waste collection and treatment.

This is a difficult problem that we are trying to find a solution to, in order to preserve a green, clean, and beautiful Dray Sap for today's and future generations," Mr. Phuoc emphasized.

Dak Nong – The journey to become a potential destination of the Central Highlands

In 2024, Dak Nong tourism recorded impressive growth with total revenue reaching 195 billion VND, an increase of nearly 22% compared to 2023. The number of international visitors is estimated at 6,200, while the number of overnight guests is 263,000, showing the growing attraction of this land on the Vietnam tourism map.

In order to continue to promote its advantages, Dak Nong aims to attract 803,000 visitors by 2025, including 7,400 international visitors, with total expected revenue of VND235 billion. To achieve this goal, the province will focus on preserving natural values, improving service quality, promoting ecotourism, community tourism and expanding cooperation with neighboring provinces such as Lam Dong, Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Phuoc.

The image of a majestic, wild but charming Dak Nong is increasingly spreading. With unique natural potential and a methodical investment strategy, this place promises to become the top destination of the Central Highlands in the near future.

Dray Sap Waterfall, also known as Dray Sap Waterfall, is a natural masterpiece located on the Srepok River, in Dak Sor Commune, Krong No District, Dak Nong Province.

About 30 km south of Buon Ma Thuot city, Dray Sap wears a majestic and mysterious beauty in the middle of the Central Highlands. Not far from Dray Sap waterfall is Dray Nur waterfall (Wife waterfall), located in Dak Lak province, and the upstream of the river is Gia Long waterfall, which used to be the mark of the Nguyen Dynasty king.

Legend has it that long ago, the Srepok River was just a peaceful river flowing between villages. On the two banks of the river, a young couple fell in love, but their love was separated by prejudice and prohibition from the two families.

In despair, they decided to throw themselves into the water together, vowing to be together forever. At that moment, the earth and sky suddenly changed, the wind blew fiercely, the waves roared as if angry at the cruel fate of the couple. The Srepok River immediately split into two branches: one side created the fierce and majestic Dray Sap waterfall - symbolizing the husband, the other side transformed into the gentle but also powerful Dray Nur waterfall - the embodiment of the wife.

That legend still echoes in the sound of pouring water day and night, making anyone who sets foot here speechless before the beauty that is both wild and mysterious, yet filled with so many feelings of love and nature of the Central Highlands.
