Mr. Danh gave me a V2 orange - a late-ripening orange from Cao Phong (Hoa Binh) to try. The skin was plump and golden yellow, and when put into the mouth, it had a fragrant, cool, sweet taste that lingered in the throat. To have these premium oranges, farmers have to take very meticulous care, thanks to which, the oranges are sold for over 30,000 VND/kg.
Late ripening orange variety, a specialty of Cao Phong land
Mr. Bui Duc Danh, hamlet Ma 1, Bac Phong commune (Cao Phong) is growing more than 1.3 hectares of oranges. His orange garden has entered its 7th year of fruiting. The main-season orange trees were harvested since November last year, and are currently blooming white flowers on the hillsides. As for the V2 orange trees - the latest orange variety that ripens from March to April every year - they are also ripening yellow, bearing many, large fruits and are in the process of sweetening.
In addition to the main orange varieties grown in the main season such as Xa Doai orange, yellow-heart orange, Chau orange, Canh orange which are sold at 18,000 - 20,000 VND/kg, V2 orange alone ripens late, has few seeds, and is sweet, so the lowest price at the garden is 30,000 VND/kg.
Mr. Danh said that V2 oranges have two types of fruit, round and flat. V2 oranges have outstanding advantages such as fast growth, healthy development, resistance to pests and diseases, good drought tolerance, wide adaptability, high and stable yield, good quality, especially the variety ripens later than other orange varieties and importantly, the late ripening V2 orange variety brings higher economic efficiency than the main orange crop.

Looking at the orange garden full of fruit, Mr. Danh said that to have V2 oranges with bright yellow skin, no seeds, and sweet taste, they must be meticulously cared for. The use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides was completely stopped 2 months ago.
"At this time, if I apply chemical fertilizer, the fruit will be green, hard and dry, so I only apply manure and spray a little foliar fertilizer, and water regularly," Mr. Danh shared.
This is the second year that Mr. Danh's V2 orange garden has yielded a harvest. Because he mainly uses manure and limits chemical fertilizers, his orange garden has grown more slowly than other households.
Last year was the first crop of late-ripening V2 oranges that yielded fruit, and Mr. Danh sold them for 35,000 - 40,000 VND/kg. He predicts that this year he will harvest more than 5 tons of late-ripening V2 oranges.

Compared to the yellow-heart orange and Xa Doai orange varieties, the late-ripening V2 orange always sells for nearly twice the price. However, V2 oranges both grow fruit and flowers, so they must be cared for with a very special "regime". Yellow-heart oranges and Xa Doai oranges are easy to care for and bear fruit. V2 oranges require more time and effort. The garden must be visited regularly to promptly detect and treat, prune or remove branches as soon as the tree shows symptoms of greening disease and other viral diseases.
According to Mr. Danh, when harvested, late-ripening V2 oranges weigh an average of 190 - 250 grams/fruit and can be kept on the tree for a long time without losing quality. V2 oranges have a thin, beautiful yellow peel with an average thickness of 3 mm, a golden core and each fruit has an average of 11 segments.
Also known as the "queen" orange
Cao Phong 3T Agricultural Cooperative (3T Farm Cooperative) of Ms. Vu Thi Le Thuy with 15 members is growing more than 21 hectares of oranges, of which 3 hectares are growing late-ripening V2 oranges. According to Ms. Thuy, compared to previous years, this year's late-ripening orange crop is due to favorable weather, so the sprouting, flowering, petal shedding, and fruiting of V2 oranges are all very favorable.
According to Ms. Thuy, one month before Tet, gardeners fertilized V2 oranges to supplement nutrition. From after Tet until now, chemical fertilizers will not be used, only manure and water will be added to maintain humidity.

Also because the area for growing late-ripening V2 oranges is small and the care is more elaborate, the price of oranges when sold is also higher than that of yellow-heart oranges, Xa Doai oranges...
"Late-ripening V2 oranges have delicious, sweet, juicy, and seedless fruit, so they are also known as the queen oranges," said Ms. Thuy.
Ms. Vu Thi Anh Dao - Deputy Head of the Department of Cultivation and Plant Protection of Hoa Binh province said that the total orange area of the province is about 4,000 hectares, of which late-ripening V2 oranges are about 1,000 hectares; the expected output of late-ripening V2 oranges this year is about 16,000 tons.
The V2 orange variety is ripe and is bearing fruit but also has just flowered for the next crop, so the Department also recommends that during harvest time, farmers should pay attention to cleaning and pruning branches that are infected with pests.
For pests, farmers should use biological and herbal pesticides for spraying. In addition, for care, limit foliar fertilizers with high nitrogen content, as well as growth stimulants, to avoid fruit bumps, while ensuring food safety for consumers.
In Cao Phong district, the V2 orange variety has been grown since 2004 and has confirmed its genetic stability in quality and productivity. The product has good quality, ripens late, has high economic efficiency and can be spread over a wide range of seasons.
In 2021, V2 orange was announced by the Intellectual Property Office to be added to the list of orange products of Cao Phong district, Hoa Binh province with protected geographical indications.
